Is Toner edible?

I had the most stupid customer today. She called in wondering if toner is edible, she thought it would make a good print on her cookies for the children in the daycare centre she works for :S

My answer was: Maam, its not more toxic than eating Lego pieces, so draw your own conclusions.

Most manufacturers guard their ?recepie? of B&W toner as a trade secret. However, the public has some information on the content.

The most dominant substance in toner is C.I. Pigment Black 6 or 7, which irritates the skin and eyes and is known to cause mutations.

But toner also includes more hazardous chemicals, typically substanses such as

* Cetylpyridinchloride
* Zinchydrabenzophat
* Pigment Red 48 Barum Salt
* CAS-nr. 102561-46-6
* CAS-nr. 116810-46-9
* CAS-nr. 1223312-54-9

All these chemicals are listed as hazardous and toxic, especially polluting the water supplies, some substances are known to be the cause of cancer or to cause mutations.

The production of toner is so polluting and poisonous, that the major bulk of the production has been "exported" to countries such as India or Peoples Republic of China.

Actually Some toner is organic grown of however i should phrase that. As on our newer printers its organic grown rather than manufactured. I dont know all the chemicals though but I guess Im small amounts its not hazardours for you body, not more than regular plastic since toner is basicly plastic with chemicals.

I saw on TechTV this printer that is used from used printers, cleaned and refurbished and then remodeled so that they can print designs onto cakes and stuff, using special "ink", though.

Well Considering this was a Xerox Multifunction B&W Laser/Copier using normal toner...ugh...she just sounded silly stupid. I should've told her to just grab a spoon and start eating with a grain of salt. It would've been such a nice darwin award...

Yeah, lego would just stay as one piece in your digestive tract. No clue what your body would do w/ a fine black powder.

Not in really small quantities which this customer was talking about. And it also still depends on how the toner was made. Different companies/printers uses different formulas. So other may be less toxic than others.

Developer would be bad but the toner that we used was just plastic.
