I live in an apartment complex...

I often receive junkmail for the previous tenants to my mailbox, and usually I just throw them away..... is this legal??

I think it is technically illegal, but I am not a postal worker. What happens if you steal it from someone elses mailbox, thats illegal I'm pretty sure, so isn't this the same thing?

unless its a bank statement, or other dated materials, i toss it

one guy who lived there still subscribes to playboy....dammed if i am not opening that....the articles are almost as well written as the ones here on anandtech 🙂

I mean isnt it federal offense to tamper with somebody's mail??

I believe it's illegal to willfully misdirect mail. Since it's not your job to deliver the mail, you're probably okay even if we're picking nits here.

But you're clean anyway because 99.999999999% of all junk mail has "or current resident" in the address.

You're the current resident. It's addressed to you. Throw it in the trash with impunity.

It's not illegal to open someone else's mail. It is, however, illegal to open someone's mailbox and remove any contents without their permission if you are not the mailman. It is also illegal to tamper with mail before it is delivered because it is, at that point, federal property.
