Is this wrong to do?

First off, I'm 17 so this isn't like a regular all-day job or anything. Every year, on the day before Christmas break, our high school takes the second half of the day and lets the students do all kinds of skits, lets their bands play, etc. Well, two weeks ago me and a friend of mine who plays drums decided to find someone to sing and play bass so we could play. Last week, I took off two days to practice (I usually work Mon-Saturday and have done this for two years, taking maybe one or two days off a month so I work quite a bit). This week, however, we were reaaaally busy trying to get things to sound good, and I've taken off two days already and told my boss that I needed Friday off (but I may go in for a while if possible). Today I find out that the PA is being set up and all the bands have to play tonight so we can get everything set right so it sounds good. I called up my boss around noon and told him I would not be able to be there right after school, but I'd try to make it afterwards and work until 7 (I usually work from 3:15-5:30). He said okay, but sounded a little pissed as always when I need to take a day off. I get to the school at 4:15 (we were supposed to play at 4:30) and find out the guy setting up the PA is really running behind and its going to be a while before things are set up. Time goes by, finally around 5:45 we get to play. I called up my boss around 5:30 and told him that it was taking a lot longer than expected and that I would do all I could to be there around 6:00-6:15 and I could work later and he says "No no, I don't need you then. You have fun with your band. *click*" In a sarcastic, pissed off voice. I hated to do this but man, I hardly ever take off for any extended period of time (like 3 days) unless its vacation or anything and I don't see why he's so pissed off. There are people there that work with me, I just run the embroidery machines and there is not a whole lot that needs done. I've already told him I'm working 36 hours next week since there is no school and he said okay. I understand that he's pissed off and why he is, but is it too much to ask to have off 6-7 days in a two week period (I understand this would be extremely unacceptable at a real job, but this is just 2.25 hours a day). I plan on sitting down and talking to him tomorrow or Saturday.

Cliff notes:
I've worked at my job for 2 years, don't take a whole lot of days off
2 weeks ago our band decides to play for our school's annual skit day
I need lots of days off (6-7 in a two week period)
Today I have to call at noon and tell my boss I can't make it because we have to set up our equipment
Boss = Extremely pissed
Am I asking too much?

If he expected you to be there today, and you call him a hour before you are supposed to be there saying something else "came up" i don't blame him for being a little upset with you.

I called him at noon, which was as soon as I found out so it would be 3.25 hours before I'm supposed to work.

it leaves your boss in a lurch. he has to find someone now in 3.25 hours to cover for you. if that is not possible then he has to cover for you and cancel his plans.

but you said you'd be in soon after you played. Then you called him at 530 saying you'll come in a little later. That shouldn't happen. If I called my boss at work and said "i'll be in at 1pm, i have a band to play with this morning" and then called at 1230 saying i'd be a little later, it's taking longer than expected, chances are i wouldn't have a job much longer.

Honestly, I'm suprised you're not fired.

EDIT: Also, did you find coverage for the days you were taking off? At my place, if you wanted off, you told the boss a week beforehand and found coverage at least 2 days beforehand. Unless it was an emergency (death in the family, disease, etc) you were not taking off the same day. And in this case, you are definitely abusing the courtesy he's affording you.

True, I can see how that is being kind of sh!tty. The thing is though, my boss works from open to close and there are other people there working at the time that usually work when I'm there. My boss doesn't have to find someone to cover for me or work in my place himself. It is really not a huge deal if I miss work, I can usually make up whatever needed done the next day. I told him two weeks ago that this was going to be a really hectic two weeks and I'd need quite a few days off. He said that's fine, because I had just got through finishing working 18 days in 3 weeks. Now he's being all sh!tty about it when I actually do ask for the days that I need off.

No, we do not have to find people to cover for us where I work, because we usually all work every day.

you didn't ask, you told. You told him you couldn't be in until late, then you told him you couldn't be in until later.

It's obviously a big deal to him if you miss work....

tell him you just can't fight this feeling anymore, and that you forgot what you were fighting for.

😀 😀 😀 - Even I caught that one. Trying to slip some REO Speedwagon lyrics into the post. 😉
