Is this worth sending to my jobs HR?

Yeah drive slow guys. It sure helped out everyone in this video from a few days ago.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0CJMGUhr5U

Even the police car is driving at 0mph and is spinning out. So many clueless people in this thread.

Icy conditions. It's Montreal. Different than snowy conditions. The fact of the matter is that it is entirely routine to drive with a few inches of snow on the ground. The plows will eat that up in a jiffy

I will say that it was inappropriate for your boss to respond that way. I wouldn't report him, but I would have a one-on-one talk with him and explain how not wanting to come in had nothing to do with dedication.

I understand where you're coming from, but given that this is a futurefields thread, the text was probably from a friend or something, as a setup to post this thread and chuckle at us taking it seriously. I don't mind that so much, it's kind of a slow day today.

As an employer I read his text not as "its unsafe for me to drive.", but more as "tell me I can have the day off."
Its very passive, and feels to me he knows its not unsafe, but he wants someone else to tell him not to come in.

As someone else said, if you are taking the day off, take the day off.

While I think you are a total pussy and should learn how to drive, that is not really the question here.

YOU decide whether you think it's safe to go to work or not. At the same time, your boss shouldn't be on your social media. That's 100% your fault, and stupid. Don't mix personal and professional life.

Snohomish county is all kind of messed up this morning. i didnt want to take the chance in my Honda, this is the text

I have only had 1 sick day in the last 2 months... I definitely value my job

Pardon the brevity but i need to know kind of quick if this is worth reporting or likely to do more harm than good

I just dont like having my commitment questioned like this, feel it was an inappropriate way to respond

man up dude. Thats fuck all.

I'm across the sound in Kitsap. We got 3-4" of snow here...I'm not leaving the house until it ALL melts.

Are you retired like your avatar claims? If you don't have to leave the house and you're worried at all about the roads, why would you?

I don't see what that has to do with the OP or people who do have to commute to a job, though.

I wouldn't go in, but my car has summer tires 😀 Before I started working from home, I've commuted 40+ miles each way in snow like that but more often than not I'd have called it a wfh day. Usually though, my company would have called it a wfh day eventually anyway (I was always the first in the office so I wouldn't get the memos until too late).

I live in the south so we wouldn't have more than a handful of snowy days anyway, so even using PTO for them wouldn't be any big deal.

I've had to have this talk with a few of our junior employees. If you're not going in to work, just say "I won't be in today". Don't explain why, don't give details, and certainly don't send pictures. It's your sick/vacation day, just take it.

I would have said I tried to make it in but the roads were too bad where I live, if the roads get better I'll come in. No pictures.

Geeze, come to New England. Up here, that's nothing. Ok, we're usually not as bad as Buffalo, or MN, but we get snow like that regularly. Grab a snow brush, brush off your car, and go to work. I've gone out in much worse. However, if there's reports of Black Ice on the roads, and not "mere'" snow, then I might reconsider too, I guess.

Oh, posting in a futurefields thread. 🙁

I don't get what this is about? Just looks like a random picture of cars. Try what?

It's in Washington state. When they get 2" of snow it paralyzes the entire state. Power goes out for days at a time and people are left without heat. Schools are closed. There are runs on staples like bread and milk at grocery stores. Office buildings are shut down and entire blocks of city streets closed to thwart looting. They don't have the snow plows or the manpower to clear the roads. People don't even own snow shovels to clear walks. It's devastating.

Wow so is that seriously considered a show stopper then? Damn lol. That's sad.

Meanwhile, this is pretty much a normal commute here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-zWK8s21PI

What sucks is waking up to this:

You're still expected to be on time. That particular pic was on one of my days off though (if it was morning it would still be pitch black out), I had a skid of construction material to unload, was not particularly pleasant but just another winter day lol. Snow plows, yeah they don't get around to doing my street till a few days after a decent snow fall. Busier streets are priority.

The counter to this is that when I lived in upstate New York the high got up to 95 and people called in because it was too hot. 😛

That is kinda funny... it rarely hits that high here but I don't imagine people would stop going to work. Suppose some offices that have no AC would maybe let people go home, but I can't think of any situation where it did happen. I know when it starts to hit 30C (86F) they do issue heat warnings. Mostly targeted at children and elderly, and basically recommends to avoid pushing yourself too much if working outside etc... Typically these heat waves don't last more than a week. When it gets that hot it's more uncomfortable than anything. Really you kinda have to suck up extreme weather if you have a job that involves working outside here. Whether it's -40 or +30 you'll be expected to work. I don't envy the guys that work on cables in those temps, not fun at all. Especially fibre. That's kinda tedius to do when it's 40 below. They do setup a temporary tent though, so they might even have a small heater to at least keep their hands warm.

i got 3 LOL's over this.

1. OP being a pussy and not wanting to drive in winter. im sure the main roads are fine. Also does your company have a snow policy?

2. the response about commitment to work.... I cant stand people like that. they are the ones who go to work with Ebola and kill the entire office.

3. reporting a co-worker to HR because he told you to get to work is a huge LOL.

I lived in Germany for a few years and when it got that hot the Germans would cancel school, work and act like the world was ending. Since my previous base was Las Vegas i just found that very amusing.

That is nothing you just wanted the day off. 1 sick day in two months? I haven't had one in 5 years.

The bums will always lose lebowski!

Heh, yeah, being from the Gulf Coast I just laughed. Of course, a few years ago we got sleet down there and I had two days off work, so...

I live in Snohomish county too, but I'm from Minnesota... I find this whole thing humorous. The roads weren't bad, even by Seattle standards.

When the snow is bad here it's way crazier than the midwest, mostly because the drivers are beyond terrible and the government is inept at plowing/salting/sanding. The odd thing is that if you drive 2 hours from here, you are literally in the snowiest place in the entire world, and they have snowplow armies that keep the roads surprisingly decent.

Did you send back a reply that said "So you admit this is bad?" Since the other person said "our area is not that bad", the implication being the picture you sent is worse than where they are.

Edit: We got our first snowfall and freeze of winter a couple days ago. I had to go somewhere early morning and I saw two flipped/rolled vehicles and numerous ones in the ditch. People trying to drive 10 over and waking themselves up by sliding onto the median. I called off work because it was going to get worse. I had a night shift, and didn't want to deal with the ice on the road when it dropped to 24f as soon as the sun went down.

The next morning, the police announced they had responded to over 50 accidents, 10 of which were rollovers, due to the weather.
