Is this worth going to doctor for?

I think I pulled a muscle in my shoulder in the gym a couple of weeks ago. What's strange is hurts when I wake up in the morning but 30 minutes later it's fine. But usually when I pull a muscle i'm ok a week later, but this has been getting only worse. I couldn't move my right arm when I woke up today it was that bad. And again, 30 minutes later it's absolutely fine - right now it's a little sore but my range of motion isn't limited at all.

Is it normal for a pulled muscle to behave in such a way, or should I see a doctor about this? I know this isn't the best place to ask that question, but I thought some of you older folks must've experienced muscle pains over your lifetime.

If the pain is "deep" in the rotator cuff area, then I would see a specialist, especially if it's recurring. The deltoid muscle is highly complex, you can really mess up your rotator doing extremely high weight/low rep lat pulldowns, but don't know what exercise you hurt it on. I've also damaged the top of my shoulder doing heavy benching, around the area where the humerus ball and socket joint connects. It was recurring, and eventually I had to stop benching heavy or risk permanent damage.

I think I have a similar injury - top of my deltoid muscle, right on the meaty part of the shoulder. How long did it take to completely heal? I haven't been going to the gym because of this and I want to start as soon as possible.

What makes you think you SHOULDN'T at least call the doctor to get their takeon it?

If you have health insurance, they would pay for the massage sessions!

Hahah, for some reason this reminded me of Seinfield episode where George and Jerry got their dentist to write them refferal to for a massage.

Well, if the pain is on the top of your shoulder (and not deep), it's from bench pressing. I first fvcked it up doing sets of 235 on incline (very heavy for me). I got the first set up pretty well (8 reps), but during the second one I damaged that top part. When I pressed on the that area (direct top of right shoulder), I could immediately feel the pain and it was very tender. It would usually take 1.5 to 2 weeks to heal, but after that, it would reinjure itself. This happened for about 3 times before I realized I wasn't giving it enough time to heal, and just stopped lifting heavy altogether after deciding I didn't want to powerlift anymore. You should definitely see a specialist though, or in the least see your regular doctor. A buddy of mine said you could risk permanant injury if anything was torn.

I injured myself doing heavy benchmarking too.
