Is this what I need to extend the range of my Orinoco card?

Yes that would help, although it isn't a very high gain antenna. Depending on how far you're trying to extend you might also check some other antennas here http://www.fab-corp.com/ You might consider putting the antenna on the access point instead of the client card for convenience too.

I have an SMC 7004AWBR router. how do i attach an external antenna to it?
I was unaware that it was possible. the two antennas look permanently attached and not removable.

I used this exact setup myself. Worked pretty good. However, the 5 dBi Magnetic Mount Omni Antenna from fab-corp.com works better. It is cheaper too.

are you talking about the * Pacific Wireless 5.5 dB Magnetic MC for ORiNOCO for $15.99?
can that be used internally, not with a vehicle?
i really don't see why not, but they're advertising it outside your vehicle

Have you opened the router to check whether or not the antenna wires are soldered to the motherboard? I searched the web, but couldn't find a definitive answer for your SMC router. If you are lucky, they are attached to the motherboard of the router with an MMCX or other standard connector.

Get a better card and not the anntenae...

Find yourself a Cisco 352 series card, they are much better than the Orinoco's and Netstumbler works just fine with them.
The Orinoco cards are only 30mw thus the need to get an external anntenae. The Cisco cards are 100mw and obviously reach much farther than their Lucent counterparts.
