Question Is this upgrade worth it in terms of performance increase?

I'm currently running an 8 year old rig: i7-930, Asus mobo, 24Gb, Geforce 250, 2-SSDs, 4-HDDS, 650W power supply. I don't do gaming, mostly Lightroom and Photoshop. I got a ballpark estimate from my local shop to upgrade to a i7-8700, upgrade to DDR4 - but only 16Gb, Geforce 1050 Ti for around $1,000. Owing to some ongoing issues someone else has to do the build.

My question is: will I see enough performance increase in Lightroom and Photoshop to justify the upgrade expense? Or are there other scenarios that make sense? Thanks!

You could drop in a hex-core (6C/12T) Westmere 32nm CPU and OC. Calling @Burpo and @aigomorla .

Yeah, get an updated GPU too.

Edit: I don't have any first-hand experience with X58 platform, so I called in the experts for ya. Thanks Burpo!

Thanks, guys. I have an ASUS P6X58-D mobo. I couldn't tell if the Xeon would fit that socket. Open to more ideas, too.

the xeon is skt 1366 also, I did the same upgrade but went from a 920, big noticeable performance jump, it doesn't list the xeon as a supported processor but it should be fine, for $20, worth trying

I promise you it does, as that's what I used.. The ASUS P6X58-D is one of the best overclocking boards there is for LGA 1366 🙂

That's really interesting. I would have to find someone to do that replacement for me. By the by, my cooler is a SCYTHE, Mugen-2 Rev.B (SCMG-2100) CPU Cooler, Socket Socket 1156/1366/775/478/AM3/AM2/939/940/754, Copper/Aluminum. It's huge. When I went from 12 to 24Gb the new RAM configuration knocked out the fan on it. But it's so good I've been running without a fan for about 3 years now, but obviously no OC.
