I was told that playing an audio cd-r in new car cd players can actually damage the laser unless it is specifically stated that the cd player can play them. Is this true or a bunch of b.s.?

I'm not really picturing how media can damage a laser itself. All the laser does is shine light at a reflective surface...

That isn't true, though some car CD players won't play cd-r disks without horrible skipping (don't know if this is true about the blank cd-rs that they charge more for and advertise as specifically for cd audio)

My 1999 honda 2 door used to play all kinds of CDs fine....then after 3 or 4 years, it now only plays non CDRs...guess my unit is busted or the laser is just weak.

Go back to whomever told you this and kill them, so their soiled DNA does not pollute the pool anymore than it already is.
