FYI - starting Jan 1, 2005, all cell phone numbers will be made public to
telemarketing firms. So this means as of Jan 1, your cell phone may start
ringing off the hook with telemarketers, but unlike your home phone, most
of
you pay for your incoming calls. These telemarketers will eat up your free
minutes and end up costing you money in the long run. According to the
National Do Not Call List, you have until Dec. 15th 2004 to get on the
national "Do not call list" for cell phones. They said that you need to
call
1-888-382-1222 from the cell phone that you wish to have put on the "do not
call list" to be put on the list. They also said you can do it online at
www.donotcall.gov Registering only takes a minute, is in effect for 5
years and will possibly save you money (definitely frustration)! Make sure
you register now!

hmm...u guys pay when people phone you??? ok, thats wierd......

in the UK, on landline or cellphone u dont pay if your being called unless u choose to accept an operator calling u with a reverse charge request.

but certainly if that is the case for u guys about being charged by companies calling u then that sucks.

Some versions of the exhortation to cell phone users to add their names to the Do Not Call Registry erroneously state there is a 15 December 2004 deadline for getting listed. Says Lois Greisman, the Federal Trade Commission official who oversees the anti-telemarketing registry: "There is no deadline; there never has been a deadline to register."

In the UK don't you pay by the minute when calling? And it's expensive unless you are using some calling card or telecom service?

if u use a pre-pay voucher type sim in your phone then u pay per minute or per second for calls you make and for text messages you send, i think one provider still does charge you to listen to your voicemails (ansafone stored on your network) but i might be wrong, the main 4 dont tho. You do NOT pay for people who call you or text you.

if you have a contract sim in your phone (all phones can be unlocked to accept any network, altho it might contravene your contract...lol) then you pay a monthly rate and get so many minutes free, and/or so many text messages free and in some cases GPRS data amount for free. Once your minutes for that month are used up you then pay for any calls you make, the more expensive the monthly charge the cheaper your calls are per minute once you are paying. texts usually stay the same although you can buy add on packs that allow you say the first 100 texts at half price etc.....but you still do NOT pay for people phoning you!

my plan is on T-Mobile, i pay £15 a month (approx US$25) and i get 750 free minutes per month off peak which is 6pm-6am and all the time over the weekend.....plus 50 free texts......the downside is my daytime call charges are about 45p (80cents) a minute (charged by the second tho) but i never call people in the daytime, thats what a work phone is for....LOL

I could however pay 3 times that and get 2000 minutes a month, 500 free texts and peak time calls for around 3p a minute.....but i dont use anywhere near that much so its a waste of money....
