Is this the way to install a new hard disc?

Soon to be installing a second, larger and faster hard disc in an old machine.
Then, hopefully, to copy across the old-drive to the new and, make the new the master and remove the old.
(phew!)

This is an out-line of what I think's involved (so far) - verification or otherwise appreciated.

1. Fit the new drive
2. Format it with some xp commad (Format?)
3. Run Norton Ghost (or similar?) to image the old drive to the new
4. Remove old drive and jumper new to be master

Job Done?

If this is all there is to it, does this not mean that I could knock out loads of new hard drives imaged from the old one (that has xp installed and loads of other software) and put them in new machines? - thus bypassing all copyright protection installation numbers?

Just use the utility that the hard drive manufacturer puts out. For example Maxtor has a program called Max Blast. You simply boot to the Maxblast CD, and it walks you through formatting the new drive and doing a drive to drive copy.

Oh, and you cant get around copy protection that way. Sure you could image a drive and boot up the computer, but all your software will recognize its a new computer and will want to reactivate.

Yep, just use the utility. If you buy an OEM drive, you can download the utility form the mfg's website.

Thanks chaps. Not having bought or installed a new hard disc before I didn't realise that they come complete with utility to do a total disc to disc complete copy.
