Battery may only be slightly larger, but I read they have some new power saving features in there to help with standby, web browsing, gaming, etc.

Anyhow, if the S4A drops in price enough then you're right about not spending a bunch more just for the S5.

I believe that's called KitKat. The thing people were just discussing about apps and syncing is vastly improved in KitKat.

g+ will still occasionally decide to destroy your battery, but project svelte is not to be forgotten.

There's a special power saving mode on the phone for when you're very low on power... it uses minimal graphics and only lets certain apps run (you can specify which ones those are). To my knowledge, Samsung doesn't have a direct equivalent to Sony's Stamina Mode; that uses the regular UI, but keeps notifications off until you wake the phone.

Samsung sure knows how to market, the S5 was all over the Oscars tonight and a photo taken by the S5 has become the most retweeted tweet in Twitter's history: https://twitter.com/TheEllenShow/statuses/440322224407314432

Still, win for them. A few years ago that would've been an iPhone.

I'm going to derail for a minute.

A few years ago it would have been an iPhone because that's just what someone would have.

This was a Note 3 because Samsung paid to have it be a Note 3.

that is a note 3

I stopped by the pop-up Samsung experience store in SOHO Manhattan and it was a bit sad that the best piece of hardware there was still the Note 3. The Note Pro and Tab Pro tablets were fine but nothing amazing (I do feel the same way about the iPad Air as well).

Frankly the best thing there was the Note 3s hooked up to 3D printers where you could design and print out a keychain size object. Gimmicky for sure, but at least it was cool.

Sounds like people are jealous of the Samsung exposure. So she used a phablet on TV, what's the big deal?

That's exactly it. Samsung did the same thing at the Olympics, where it gave free Note 3s to athletes in an attempt to get exposure. There's even claims that it was trying to tell athletes that they weren't 'allowed' to show competing devices, although there's nothing actually prohibiting it.

It's rather telling that Ellen was using a Note 3 on the telecast, but was using an iPhone backstage. Samsung has the same problem that BlackBerry did -- it can pay celebs to use its devices at events, but they'll go right back to their iPhones afterward.

Honestly, I don't really care. If Samsung wants to pay $$$ to have their devices shown, then they're totally in the right to do so.

I just don't think it's fair to say "That would have been an iPhone a few years ago" because Apple doesn't pay or provide the devices for exposure like this, to my knowledge.

Nobody is jealous. Someone already pointed out that the note 3 was only used due to Samsung paying for it. When celebrities generally use iPhones it's because its their phone of choice, not the phone they were paid to use. See above with Ellen tweeting from her personal iPhone.

It's just product placement. Everyone does it, Coke, Apple, Omega, Sony, Ford....etc. So what's the big deal? Who cares what Ellen uses on stage and back stage?

If anything Samsung should be praised. It seems like everyone is talking about the group selfi. Sounds like a huge success to me.

I agree. To us, it doesn't matter what phone a celebrity uses at a mass-sponsored event. That doesn't make the phone any better or worse than its competitors, it just means that company paid money to get their phone/brand exposure. Good for them, it's a smart move.

I like Samsung phones, but personally I think the Note 3 is way too big for a small woman like Ellen. Oh I'm sure she could use it, but it would probably require 2 hands and it wouldn't be comfortable.
A disproportionate number of the people I know/see with Notes are small women. Purses make for easy carrying.

Anyway, it's not news that most US celebs use iPhones. That's just the way the groupthink works at the moment.

It's that the promo was both painfully obvious and insincere -- there was no doubt that Ellen wouldn't be using Samsung gear if it weren't for the cash. If you're going to do paid placements, you make them relatively subtle (simply carrying the device, maybe a quick use of it) and make some attempts at suggesting that your pitch person genuinely likes the product. Here, it was pretty clear that Ellen picked up the Note 3 only when she had to go onstage.

At any rate, this is the GS5 thread, so I'll say this: the phone's first ad was pretty underwhelming. It's not cringe-inducing, but I don't think it's going to have people lining up for the phone in droves, either. If you're going to run a show-specific ad... make it special!

LOL! Samsung SPONSORED the event. It's funny all the silliness over them also *gasp* showing their product on screen as well.

Newsflash: It's TV. It's ALL just one big ad. Everything.

Ellen's salary and everyone else's is paid for by advertising. If Coke were paying the bill, she'd drink one on camera. (OMG! But backstage she had a Pepsi! Say it isn't so! The real world exists in Hollywood too!)

Sounds like jealousy to me.

It couldn't have been more subtle. Ellen was a total pro who handled it very well. The whole bit was to take a group selfi, so of course she was going to carry a phone. Was she supposed to use an iPad instead? Would an iPhone be subtle? This whole "outrage" over a silly product placement is just.......silly.

I think you guys are seeing "outrage" where there isn't any. Or is this happening elsewhere on the internet that I just haven't stumbled across yet?
