Is this temp normal for an Athlon XP?

I hav an athlon XP 1600+ nothing is o/c. I have a thermalright sk6 copper heatsink and a sunon 24 cfm fan. My temps can reach the high 60's C. At one point the temp alarm went off. The mobo is an Asus a7v133-c. I also use AS 2 compound .

The athlon 1600+ (1400mhz) should run about 10% cooler then like tbird...my tbird 1.4@1.5 would do 44c idle and 52c load...I had a bit better cfm on my fan though, but not as good a heatsink...

I would look to check hsf placement and that you didn't pu t too much as2 on it...


What are your idle temps?
What are your system temps?

I know mobos very and accuracy of socket a mobos are questionable, but this is high for even and asus mobo...

Remember that Asus mobo's read higher (so say more accurately). My old T-Bird 1.1GHz would get that hot with a crappy Chrome orb (on A7V). I never had any lock ups do to my cpu overheating. Plus, the Athlons are suppose to be able to handle up to 90c (according to AMD).

Now I have a XP 1900+ running on an Asus A7V133 with a Volcano 6Cu (4500rpm) and can hardly get the temps over 50c.

Your heat alarm shouldn't have gone off, it must be set pretty low. Mine is set to 75c as default on a K7 Master.

I have a 1700 xp, not overclocked and the sk6. It stays around 30c. I also used Arctic Silver 2 and have the Delta fan blowing towards, not away from the heat sink.

That is quite high.

What's your voltage? That'll have a lot to do with the temp.

All motherboards take the temp from different spots so hard to compare different brands but the XP does run quite a bit cooler than the Tbird and you have a pretty good cooler.

The other possibility is the hs/fan isn't making proper contact. The thermal pad on the hs was removed before the AS was put on?

What is the average temp for XP1700 with the retail hsf? At what temp should I start to worry?
I just put one together...second time ever....and I saw the CPU temp go up 49*C while installing OS......system was around 32*C...
I shut it down. Am I over-reacting?

Probably ... WHat is your motherboard? chances are high that your temps are normal for the setup you have, along with your system temp.

Perfectly normal temp for an Asus mobo, but could be better.

I built a system with Xp1700+, ASUS AV7E 266 and GC68. Normal load was around 55C.

littletemple: Depends on your mobo. Using a 1700+ with retail hs, my K7 Master would show temps from 55-65c depending on ambient temp.

I have an ECS k7s5a...with intake and exhaust fans.
No overclocking. Just checked AMDs website and the max temp for XP is 90*c.
Guess I'm ok for now...right?

My XP1700+ @1540 on a Soyo Dragon plus reads as 48C for 100% load. At idle, it drops down to 32C. Retail HSF.

I think maybe I didn't put enough AS3 on or didn't do it right. Would that make a big difference?

My XP1800 non-OC, running SETI on a MSI K7T Turbo seems to be locked in @ 52C, with a Taisol GCK7600092/Sunon Fan and AS-2.
I did forget to plug in the fan when I first installed, and the system lasted about 5 minutes.
I turned off immediately, and the HS darn near burned my fingers.
Anyway, plugged the fan in, and everything booted up. System seems to be humming along quite nicely.


As far as too much/not enough Thermal Compound, remember that you really only want enough to fill in the
minute crevices, and any surface differences due to convex/concave surfaces of the CPU & HS. So,
actually less can be better, as you really want as much bare metal on metal as possible.

My normal temps are around 47-52c with a Thermaltake 6cu setup. My case temp is around 38 c, so not too bad really.......wish I knew of a good way to get my case temps down without cutting holes, etc though..... I just have too many hard drives, burners, etc to keep it all cool.....
