i want a system to put monowal on and throw in a few pci eithernet cards. would this system be enough to run it ??

Dell Optiplex GX100 - Celeron 433, 64MB, 10GB HD, onboard nic, Modem.

or should i be looking at something more like this

Dell Dimension 4700
Pentium 4 Prescott 520 (2.8 ghz)
512 MB (2x256) memory
40GB Serial ATA hard drive
16x DVD
1x PCI-E Slot
3x PCI slots
Windows XP Professional from Dell
Keyboard
Mouse

sure, it would be perfect for a router. Don't use windows though. Have you looked at Smoothwall?

The Celeron system is more than enough. The P4 would be a massive overkill.

Edit:
As far as prepackaged firewall solutions, there's Monowall, Smoothwall, IPCop, and probably many others that I haven't thought of...

I personally use OpenBSD, but that's a general purpose operating system with a focus on security. I could go with IPCop, but it wouldn't be worth disrupting my WAN.

Give smoothwall a try, it's very user friendly, powerful, clean interface. Doesn't take long to setup
