Is this service from an IT department reasonable?

We've got several high-end workstations at work, which are part of an exceptionally expensive (and exceptionally c**p, but that's another thread) IT system.

However, the workstations are progressively dieing, and we're now starting to get to the point, where there aren't enough to go around. Just to reiterate, these are high-end workstations, with highly specialised displays and software (estimated cost about $40k per seat) and a very expensive software licence/support contract (estimated $5k per seat per year).

Example 1. Workstation has a faulty DIMM. Periodically reboots and logs some sort of memory parity error in the event log. Usually, but not always, stops at POST with a 'Parity error on DIMM 0'. First logged a ticket with IT 2 months ago. They've come along a couple of times, rebooted it, and got it into windows, and left saying that it's fine. Trouble is that it's unusuable, because it keeps rebooting.

Example 2. The software is incrdibly unstable, and as core parts of the software run as a service, when it crashes you can't CTL_ALT_DEL it, nor can you shutdown because the service has hung. Only option is to reset and pray. 3 weeks ago, this happened to me. I reset the box. But now the OS is hosed, and it won't come back up. Ticket logged 3 weeks ago. Workstation still dead.

I think IT are sick of having me phone them, but I'm beginning to wonder whether there is something terribly wrong with them - as these shouldn't be terribly difficult problems to fix.

run a bootable memtest, when it displays the failure have the monkey come down and look at it.
dunno about the other system. good luck.

it's unacceptable IMO

put up a whiteboard outside your office, write the number of hours of work lost to no computer. apply industry average wage to it.

your manager will raise hell.

That is what management is for, making sure you get all you need to do your job.

The best way to get someone to do something they are supposed to be doing is to make sure whoever is paying the bills to know they are pissing money away.

Sounds like a lazy IT dept. to me. Time to complain up the chain of command.

Yup definately have a Lazy IT dept. Every single thing you listed sounds like easy fixes to me. even the workstation that became unbootable after the dirty shutdown shouldn't present any great challenge to a half way decent IT dept. I agree with some of the previous posters. Kick it up the chain. Send the IT dept manager an email asking to have these longstanding issues corrected with clear descriptions of the problems and the less than enthusiastic attempts to help from the IT dept. CC His supervisor and his supervisors supervisor and blind copy your superiors. Sit back and watch the *hit hit the fan.

Orc-Stations Huh?
I'd say that's your problem right there. You should demand that you get Human stations! The ones you have were designed for Orcs. It sounds like your IT dept is all Orcs too, so you might just have to find somebody who speaks Orcish.

Take out the defective DIMM and stop your whining.

And after he gets fired or seriously reprimanded for not having IT do it? Or if other problems crop up and he gets the blame squarely on him?

How much your IT guys get paid? Sounds like a cake job. I'd be a superstar there.

Its not like I'm suggesting the OP bring in his own copy of Windows and do a dual boot install.
