Original sentence is gramMatically correct.
And in other news - teachers/professors don't like to hear that you didn't have time for their test/exams because you were studying for someone else.

How does this sounds and is this gramatically correct?

My time was spread thin between family obligations and studying for classes, which left me little time to fully prepare for the exam.

Saying you need to study for your classes and implying that it is a reason for your poor performance on an examination is preposterous. :)

Because is a conjunction, not a preposition, and you can start a sentence with it if you include the comma that he forgot.

if you were busy studying then you had time to prepare, suck it up and save yourself from looking like an asshat

Mixing words around from the original sentence doesn't necessarily make it better.
