Is this schedule crazy for a first year undergrad?

Personally, I thought this looked reasonable but my parents disagree.

C S 313H LOGIC, SETS, & FUNCTIONS: Honors
C S 315H ALGORITHMS & DATA STRUCTS: Honors
CH 301 PRINCIPLES OF CHEMISTRY I
M 408D SEQ, SERIES, AND MULTIVAR CALC

+ Generic 3 hour foreign culture class that counts as a language.

Total is 16 hours, not too unreasonable imo.

I'll enter with 41 hours of advanced placement and community college credit.

My advice, change your major to the easier comp sci class and use the time to get up to speed on the latest program languages, (Flex, Apollo, RoR, Silverlight)

Unless you want to teach CS, you're going to school to get a job, and investing time in learning those languages is worth thousands of dollars a year more than your tuition.

3 300 level classes and a 400 level class does seem like a bit much for a freshman... don't those classes have prerequisites?

Sorry, I probably should have clarified. The first number is the hours while the second and third are the course level. Anything under say a 20 is lower level and above is upper level.

That doesn't seem to bad at all then. What are your parents concerned about? 16 hours is normal. All lower-division classes. 3 major classes and 2 gen eds. I assume you got AP Computer Science and AP Calc credit. Looks fine to me.

CH 301 PRINCIPLES OF CHEMISTRY I

This class is a joke if you have ever taken any high school chem. 300+ people 75% half asleep.

M 408D SEQ, SERIES, AND MULTIVAR CALC

Make sure you use the instructor reviews - I had Fonken (i think that was his name - i dont know if hes still around) but he was pretty good. Stick with the native english speakers for math heh.

They were concerned about all the science and math combined. I tried to explain to them that I'm a CS major, and it comes with the major, but parents are parents. I did (or will in three days) get both AP CS and Calc credit.

Honors classes at that low of a level are much nicer than the huge 'weed-out' courses of the same material. You will learn a lot more from honors classes which ends up making them easier, depending how you look at it.

You'll be fine as long as you goto your classes. When you get to your last couple of semesters, post your classes and ask again.

Well, if you're good at computer science you'll find that those classes are easier than non-CS classes.

16 credits is pretty standard, and the fact that you're going in with CC credit and apparently have the necessary pre-reqs completed, I'm sure you'll be fine. Just stay on top of things.

You really should look into taking an easier science class... I don't think chemistry is required for a CS degree. I took intro to astronomy and looked at stars and planets all class for my natural science requirement. :)

I see they moved the Logic class. When I took it (8 years ago or so) it was "Philosophy 313K Logic, Sets & Functions" and had no business being in Liberal Arts. It also wasn't required for Math majors, much to my surprise. If this class clicks for you, the semester will go great. I dunno if Robert Causey is still there teaching it, but do your best to get him. Out of every class I took in every major I switched to at UT, this class was my favorite and most useful. CS 315 shouldn't be too tough, if CS 307 wasn't too bad for you.

Personally, I struggled a little with 408C but aced 408D. It all comes down to the professor, as someone else mentioned.

Generally speaking, CS at UT is pretty tough, but it depends on how good you are at it and Math. You will take a ton of math courses for a CS degree, you should be able to pretty easily double major if you take a couple extra math courses and pick math as your "science section". If you don't have a part time job and can manage your free time well, that schedule can be handled. Those CS courses can eat up alot of time.

I took physics because chemistry seemed like it might involve some memorization, and frankly I think physics is a lot more interesting. Turned out to be pretty much an exact duplicate of the physics class I took in high school (this wasn't a class for physics majors, just a gen. ed.)

Such a complicated system. What happened to just sub-100 for lower divs, 100+ for upper, and 200 for grad?

And can you take classes pass/no pass? If so I'd do that foreign culture class that way (unless it's required that you take foreign language req. with a letter grade).

I don't think you should rush the math requirements. I did, and sometimes I do regret it. Rushing some of the common stuff can be odd especially if you don't know other freshmen in the class. During my second semester I did upper division probability theory, and my 4th semester I did graduate level inferential statistics for biostatisticians and none of my friends were in there and you couldn't really get that much help breaking it in with other people because they already have their own friends and groups to hang out/study with.

Are you working, or just going to school? If you are just going to school, you should be able to handle even more than that.

Isn't LOGIC, SETS, & FUNCTIONS UT's name for Discrete Math?

That class and Algorithms & Data Structures should be fun.

Looks fine to me. Then again I don't know how those courses are at your school, so I can't tell for sure.
