Is this right?

16X DVD is the fastest you can reliably spin a DVD, just like 52X was the maximum for CDs.

Any CD-ROM device saying it supported more than 52X was misleading, by using the difference between the outside and inside of the CD itself... obviously data rates will be faster on the outside - but that's not the fastest maximum rate for the whole CD, 52X is.

They won't get faster than 16X.

On another note, the new tech is Blu-Ray and/or HD-DVD. (Hopefully HD-DVD gets dropped)

Probably correct. DVD speed are not rated the same as CD speed. 16x is pretty damn fast! I forget the ratio to CDr but it is faster. Get one now. the new tech will be either Blu-ray or HD-somethingorother. Wont be on the PC consumer level at an affordable price for a bit so just get a DVD burner now. They are so damn cheap get 2! 🙂 Blu-Ray will win as soon as the PS3 comes out. 😉

Blu ray will have much higher transfer times. I also belive hd-dvd will be quicker also. Dvd will die slowly just like vhs... or floppies

It makes sense to me to buy a DVD burner now, but how long do ya think it will take Blu-ray to become mainstream with consumers.
And how long will DVD be mainstream. 😛

I say at least a year after the PS3 hits. I think that whatever new format wins its gonna have to be DVD compatible. DVD caught on way faster the VHS or BETA and there are more DVD players than VCRs so I would HOPE whatevernew format wins they wil play DVD.

All Blu Ray / HD-DVD players are almost guaranteed to work with DVDs, just like todays DVD players work with CDs.

All you need to do is add another reading/writing laser. Current drives have a red laser for DVDs and an infrared laser for CDs. All they need to do is add those 2 same lasers to Blu-Ray / HD-DVD drives and you'll have backward compatibility.
