Ask the distributor about the dimensions, in pixels, of the photos on the CD.

Just got a reply. 400x 600 probably not gonna cut it huh?

Wow. Nowhere close. That's like, 1999 webcam quality.

So my question is how are all these people selling reproduction WW2 Posters on ebay then? Are they just making direct copies of originals? Or do they have digital copies?

72 dpi doesn't tell us anything, because we don't know how many inches tall/wide the picture is - I doubt it's 24.

The answer to your question is yes, no, and maybe. You could print the poster at just about any resolution, and it'd probably look alright at some distance, but with insufficient resolution it would look like crap up close.

Actually, DPI tells you everything. A picture can be 1" or 100" but if it is 300 DPI, you know that every square inch of that picture will be represented by 300 pixels.

300X300 really. 72 px is screen resolution, representing the amount of pixels possible at the time it was created. thats probably the only reason it is still existing.

and even at 200dpi your 24" poster will have some pretty noticable pixelation around objects due to antialiasing most likely. make sure you solve those issues before paying an output lab to print something that expensive. i used to print fiery stuff before, and i wouldnt ever print anything unless it was scanned at 300 minimum. i know newer printers are far beyond the fiery tech, so it may not be as unforgiving now. i havent done graphic design for a decade at least.

Probably a scan with digital touchups

my stepdad is working on scanning over 400 pictures he took in vietnam, both of the countryside as well as fire fights and notable landmarks. he had them put to slide instead of paper, so its not as easy as just slappin em on the scanner. im hoping to find a few treasures i can touch up and enlarge, that would be cool. i never thought of them being marketable tho.

Most of the time, buying a photo CD and then printing out "posters" is illegal.

It's illegal for me to print them? Or for them to sell them? Since they are no longer in real production anymore I don't see why I couldn't print one out for my wall.
