Is this PSU enough for a 4850?

Current system:
-E4400 processor
-X850XT video card
-250GB harddrive
-2GB memory
-cd/dvd drives x2
-p5b motherboard

I was told that the current PSU I have, a 430W thermaltake (http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16817153023) isn't enough if I replace my x850xt with a 4850?

Is this true? the guy said something along the lines of my 12v rail not having enough amps.

thanks

I just used a power supply calculator and it said my recommended wattage was 245W with a 4850..

do i really need to upgrade the PSU?

i think the problem with mine is that the 12v rail has only 18 amps? anyone?

I can't be certain it was the PSU, but I just replaced my Seasonic 430 with a Corsair 550 because of random crashes.
For me it could have been case heat instead as I modified the fan setup at the same time to keep the system cooler.
All I know is that this card is a serious power hungry hog. If you want to be safe buy a more powerful PSU.
If you want to take the chance that it's enough power and don't mind waiting while a new PSU is shipped if there is an issue then go with
what you have. I doubt it would cause any serious harm if caught early. It would just randomly crash as the voltages dropped.
If that happens don't keep running it that way as over time it could cause a problem. Not to mention corrupt your data.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help,
Mark

I remember the X850 XT being a power hungry beast. I just checked a review and seems I remember right. That is higher then reviews of the 4850 show.

I'd guess that if your x850XT is ok, the 4850 should be as well.

^^I was thinking of getting that antec PSU with 500W instead of 430W.

However when I looked at my power consumption with a calculator it said I was hovering around 265W. So is the problem mainly that I only have 1 12v rail right now?

Do you think the 430w antec would be enough since it has dual 12v rails?
