Is this problem with vid card or monitor or both?

My monitor is a Samsung 170S 17" LCD.

I just replaced a computer with onboard video with a computer that has a GeForce3 Ti200 video card with 128MB DDR. Both computers are running Windows XP Pro. I have installed the most up to date drivers for the video card and the monitor.

Here is the problem:

When I start Halflife on the new computer, the screen goes blank but I can still hear the sound effects. If I hit escape a couple of times, the menu appears and I can start a new game. If playing single player mode, the game starts and runs fine. If I choose the LAN option, the screen goes blank and I have to ESC back to the menu. I hooked the computer up to a 17" Envision CRT monitor and it works just fine with that monitor. I plugged the old computer back into the LCD and it works just fine. It's as if the video card in my new computer does not like my monitor (which is less than 3 months old). I tried adjusting the resolution and the frequency of the monitor (everything from 60Hz to 85Hz) but nothing seems to work.

Aside from this, the computer and monitor work fine for all other applications.

This has me stumped. Anybody have any ideas?

I just noticed that if I go into the DirectX Diagnostic tool (dxdiag) and hit the "Test Direct3D" button, the test fails (when connected to the Samsung 17" LCD). When I hook the computer up to the Envision 17" CRT monitor and run the same test, the test passes. What gives?

I don't know much about the game, but it sounds like the lan option has its own video settings and the current settings are out of range of the LCD monitor.

hmm i don't know anything about Geforce cards, but if your videocard has dual inputs or tv-out, go into the videocard settings and make sure only the LCD is selected and tv-out or the 2nd monitor is disabled.

You may try to upgrade the monitor drivers. If that dont work, delete the driver reference in Device Manager and rescan/reboot. Also, try to reduce the refresh rate on your monitor/adaptor to a low setting like 60mhz as a test.

For an LCD monitor it should be at 60hz.. anything higher won't make a difference.
