Is this possible?

Okay,

I travel alot between countries and have one base here in the US and another in India. Now I have my LAN here in the US connected via a T1 line. My Machine back in india is connected via a cable connection. Since the US is my primary home, all my files are on a fileserver in the LAN. Is there anyway for me to access the resources of my US LAN when I'm sitting on a computer in India?

Thanks!

yes, but question, is 128 bit encryption available in india?
Honestly, I'm not real sure, but giving that India is a major IT hub, it should be!

128 bit encryption is a political matter not a technical matter. you can only export it to certain countries i was wondering if india qualified. i know for eg that canada qualifies, I also know that north korea does not.

about encryption export rules, basically you can export strong encryption (64 bit & higher) to any non-government end user in any country that the U.S. does not have an embargo. This excludes Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria, but it does leave India in the clear. You can read all about encryption regulations here.

Now, in terms of your actual question, if you ONLY need file access, then why not setup an FTP server in the US and get/put files to it from India? As long as you can secure it well, that'll be the quickest and easiest way to set things up. If you need application access, IP tunneling, remote control, etc, then the VPN tunnel makes sense.

thanks i'd never actually taken the time to look those up cause i don't deal internationally at all.

also, the ftp thing. ya your right, i just assumed he needed more than file access, which is a big assumption in retrospect.

Thanks alot guys, actually I do need more than File access.. so VPN tunelling is probably what I am going to go with. About the encryption rules.. my ignorance on the matter clearly shows through but thanks alot for the useful feedback!

Technically (bare in mind I'm not a lawyer), if you were using and laptop and going back and forth between India and the US with that laptop and not installing 128-bit encryption on any devices other than what already had it when you left the states it wouldn't be exporting, as long as the laptop comes back when you come back.
