what im trying to do is connect my desktop computer to a hardwired router and i want to connect my laptop to a wireless source.would this require 2 routers or could i connect the laptop to a wired router with an adapter.if possible could i get a rundown of the hardware required to complete this task.i know i need the wireless card for the laptop but what would plug into the wired router port to make 1 port wireless.thanks for advise

Technology wise the solution is to buy an Access Point, plug it to the open port on the Router, set it up and done.

However Access Points are more expensive than Cable/DSL Routers, and they provide Wireless flexibilty that is not needed by most users.

So you might want to buy a New Wireless Cable/DSL Router to replace your current Router. Or you can configure a new Wireless Router as a switch with an Access Point and plug it into the Current Router.

Any wireless router I have seen also has 4 wired ports on the back. No need to make things more complicated than that.

Same here. I have hooked up three and all of them had ports on the back that can be used simultanesouly.

Just get a wireless router. You can get a wireless G router for $30 now days.
The 4 ports in the back are for your wired PCs and the wireless, well, they don't need any ports, they're wireless.
