Here's the question:
If we got rid of all the illegals in the US, there would no doubt be a large shortage of workers for many things, predominatly field workers.

Is it possible to replace these workers with child workers and still have prices be even close to what we're used to?

I predict that it takes at least 2 child workers to even come close to the work of 1 immigrant in an 8 hour day. I'd believe it's as high as 4 children to 1 immigrant. Also, children would have to be paid at least min wage, which is more than many illegals are making.
--------EDIT: in case the previous paragraph wasn't a big enough clue, I DON'T think it's even remotely possible to replace our immigrant workers. Not even close.

So, it is possible?

What a monumentally stupid thing to ask. At least you didn't post a link to that hideous shirtless guy.

Who?

and is it stupid because it is possible, or because it's not possible?

You are suggesting child labor as a solution so that illegal workforce won't be needed? Ehhh, i would say that is just a dumb question not worthy of a proper response.

I don't think that he's saying that as if he believes it. He seems to be asking this question since someone else in the illegal immigrants thread is acting as if this is possible.

seems like a highly un-objective thread and poll which spurred off of Felix thread, not something I will choose to vote in as it is totally biased.

Personally I feel Illegals either need to go, or they need to make an effort to get their act together and get legal and quick, if you cannot follow the immigration rules of said country then you have NO RIGHT TO BE HERE and using and abusing our social support systems (what little of them their are).

I am in the other thread too, i worded it wrong, what i meant was that the question is just dumb and should not even be asked in the first place.

this comes striaght from Felix's thread. I'm all for following the laws and such but I think it's moronic to actually think you can replace the work force with child workers, that's ALL I'm asking. No politics, no laws, just is it possible.

I don't see how it could be even remotely possible. Somone who voted yes, please tell me why.

What makes you think there aren't already children of migrant workers (legal or otherwise) working in US agriculture? Human Rights Watch Article

native kids are whiny brats, they wouldn't work near so hard and they'd probably destroy most of what they picked.

Of course there are child workers, I don't deny that. But there are many more adult, illegal, immigrant workers who, if were deported, would need to be replaced. Do you believe that children workers could fill the void, do just as good of a job and get paid the same so that the prices of food don't increase?

I say no, but I'd like to know if I'm wrong.

I agree. They might not ruin all that much, but they certainly wouldn't work as hard.

Dammit. I just got my sight back from the last time I saw that picture. Why didn't I see that coming?! WHY DID I CLICK?!

And hey, how about a choice of "possibly" for the poll above?

I was thinking that but then I'd need one for "possibly not" or something equal for the opposite.

Why don't we make the wellfare recipients work the fields in exhange for sucking on the government tit?

We don't have to worry about offending them since they can't afford computers anyway.

No, I don't think children would be as effective as adults.

More importantly, why would we want them to be? Our priority for children should be education, not a steady stream of cheap labor.
