Ok my friend had this Philps 4x 4x 24x CD-RW we tried letting windows 98 on his computer reinstall the CD-RW by deleting it out of the device manger but it still didnt fix the problem of the CD-RW reading a music cd or any cd It just keeping blinking the green light then stops sooner or later but we still cant get to the cdrom if we go to my computer it just says there is nothing in there.
I tried the CD-RW in my machine and it still didnt work and did the exact same thing. Wouldnt read one cd i had either

Is it dead? And would it be worth to get fixed?
Its about 1 1/2 years old. Think warranty its 1 year. :(

The Philips 460PCA/Yamaha 4416/Iomega ZipCD were crap. Mine died twice and was replaced under warranty. I know of two other members here that also had the drive die. Going to Usenet, you'll find a lot of people complaining about the same thing with a few mentions of class action lawsuit.

I say dump the drive and get a new one. Mostly likely the lasers burned out.

wow didnt know that. Thanks
Is HP a good CD-RW brand? Because i think we want to get it locally but what brands are good still even if they arent locally ?
Lite-On 12x 10x 32x for $90 i hear is a good one by a lot of people but not sure.

And you are sure there is nothing i can do to fix it? Like lets say a lens cleaner? Or open it up ? Or get it fixed by the company?

You could try and RMA it but mine took 8 weeks to turn around each time. It seems the drives had a problem with the lasers burning out. There are two lasers and the symptom that something bad was going down is exactly how you described it. Both times mine would lose the ability to write but could still read just fine. Within a few days it would lose the ability to read and write.

My repaired drive was given to my brother who only burns one of two CDs a month.

BTW, just want to make sure. The drive is black with a bronze/copper tray right?
