look how he's holding the thing - only with thumb and index finger. His otherfigers are practically on the side of the mike. Normally youd keep thumb on the bottom and the other figers over the top.

Heheh...I remember that 😀 Ray Charles what quite a card. I saw him in concert in New York some years back and he was a crack up!
 
Yeah, its pretty obvious.

If you watch him when he plays the piano you'll notice that the mic he sings into has a boom and so he's not the one holding it (its not exactly easy to play the piano one handed you know, although I'm sure Ray could do it).

No, he did it at a democratic benefit when Klinton, Bore and Ferry were present. He didn't want them to feel like the only losers at the celebration.

 
Given the way his fingers are holding it, the mic would fall out of his hand.. the heavy part of the mic has no support.

I'd expect his fingers to hold the mic like that if it were reversed and the heavy part near his mouth.
