Personally, I cant think of anything more offensive than the American Flag. I mean, with all those stars and stripes boring their way into your head, turning you into a mindless neo-con zombies, its no wonder Florida residents cant seem to vote properly. Im going to go perform some abortions now, just to get my mind of this supreme injustice.

We live in America, we GET IT! We don't need a flag in every classroom to tell us where we are. the US is the only country I know who has flags in the classrooms and makes kids say the pledge every single day.

Are you serious?

First off all, we stopped having to say the pledge in 1991. Secondly, plenty of other countries are trying to brainwash their public.

Places like China, Cuba, North Korea, many middle eastern countries, etc.

Eitherway, the next thing we will be forced to attend parages and wear arm bands, All Arabs will have to wear a cresent and star pin on their shirts to make sure everyone knows who they are.
Yeah, it's not like these officials were *elected* or anything... Oh, wait.

See Jeff, we live in this thing called a Representative Republic, where we elect people to make decisions like this. So if the people of the fine state of Florida want this changed, all they have to do is say so when election time comes around again.

I can't really say that I don't like the american flag, since when I look at it I see freedom, happiness, and safety, but some people are obsessed with it, and they hang them everywhere. That's the part I don't like about the flag, patriotism, and this country.

Being a Floridian of 18 years, I can safely say that it's almost universaly common for a flag in EVERY classroom for K-12 schools. I think colleges are the only ones that will be affected by this.

yes it may be common, but there is no point to it. It just makes the classrooms look too Americanized. the world should be an equal place and america shouldnt stand out like that.

yup it was that way when I was in school to but that was before Bobby Kennedy was assasinated

They are American flags, and chances are if you are in a public school in this country, you are an American (at least you SHOULD be). So, what exactly is the problem here?

Oh no! Not PATRIOTISM! God forbid!

I've never understood the strong dislike people have of patriotism for one's country.

I agree. (Nuff said)

You must be a pretty big dumbass to reach that conclusion from this.

the US is the only country I know who has flags in the classrooms and makes kids say the pledge every single day.

As opposed to the countries that have a lifesized portrait of their glorious leader hanging in every classroom, not to mention every street corner, and being shown on every TV station. Maybe you forgot about that. Or you're just a dumbass.

People seem to forget that the American flag is the symbol of the entire country, not just a single group or party. Hanging a country's flag in public buildings is not the same as hanging a Nazi swastica (which represents a single political/military group) or the picture of a country's leader.

even if the state is paying for it, that money comes from the state's budget. The legislature would probably end up procuring that money from the schools' budget!

A whole $5000? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! How can a college be expected to pay such a large expense?

The problem here is that schools, even private universities, are being required to fork over money for the flags. Unless the school can find a private donor, then they are now forced to fork over their funds for purchase these flags. This would be similar to the government saying that you must display a flag in every room of your house, and you must purchase the flags yourself.

This is only a small portion of the problem, though.

The larger problem is that the schools are being forced to display a flag, which is merely a symbol of our country, or risk being punished. This isn't about patriotism or anti-patriotism, this is stupidity. A flag has nothing to do with freedom, not displaying a flag does not mean you don't support our country, or freedom, the flag itself does not guarantee our freedom or anything like that. Requiring a flag to be in every classroom does not do anything but require a flag to be put in every classroom. People will not suddenly become more patriotic, people will not instantly learn about their freedoms, or the history of our country. It would have been better to support a stronger American History program in elementary schools, or something even slightly effective.

It's not about the amount, it's about the fact that they are being forced to do it.

The problem is that you, and MANY others, are making this into a much bigger issue than it really is. To begin with, the law was passed unanimously in Florida; therefore, it must be something that they want down there. If citizens of Florida don't agree, they can change it on the next ballot. At the same time, $5000 is not much to ask a school to spend on flags, especially when, for the most part, it is American tradition to have a flag in every classroom. Many things that we do in life don't make sense, but they are done for the sake of tradition. Why on earth do people spend thousands on dollars on a single funeral? The person is dead and can be thrown in a hole in the ground for free. Funerals make no sense logically, and in terms of cost, but we do them anyway.
