Is this normal?

I dropped some coins and small things on top of my computer by accident. The computer immediately restarts.

I have a raven case with a rotated mobo. Nothing fell inside. This has happened a couple of times because I'm an idiot.

You are NOT AN IDIOT. Nobody who can say that IS.

Are you saying, since this last event, the computer keeps restarting. Can you please give more details?

Are you saying you have done the coin dropping on the case more than once? If so, pls share that history and its results.

Computer is on the floor and I have a dresser right next to it with clutter on top. On multiple occasions I have knocked some stuff off the dresser onto the computer. The computer has a grill on top so nothing touches the wires.

I would like to know if something gets knocked loose or if it is just a safety put in place by the mobo.

OK this helps my take a bit....but I remain unclear on what is going on right NOW with this system.

Are you saying each time this has happened, the system reboots once in response and then runs normally?

Or something else?

Once with no permanent issues (yet).

Although I have had issues with shorts that cause my computer to rapidly power on and off. I usually reseat the ram and a few if the PSU connections to fix it.

K.....you are saying this coin dropping event was an isolated one, the system responded by rebooting but now runs normally?

And re these 'issues with shorts" pls be specific. You mean apparently spontaneous events? Or events you can associate with something?

😱check for loose ground or plugs.

I was thinking....getting more clarity by soliciting more detailed info....that something is either not fully connected, maybe even the mobo not secure in some way. Cause having to reseat ram would mean the sticks lost communication with the board, not cause they wasn't physically secure, right?

BUT, as of right now, my take is his system isn't rapidly powering on and off. But I think he needs to give more specifics in this. Boht in this recent event and in sharing what the shorting in the past was associated with.

Have you tried hitting the case to simulate the coins dropping?

I'm with denis280, kinda sounds like a grounding issue.

That???

You might have a short in the on/off switch, too. Although coins hitting the computer shouldn't be enough to seriously rock the case, the resonant frequency (like a tuning fork) might be enough to trip a weak switch.

I wouldn't bother with the RAM or PSU cables... if it continues to happen, it's not that. I would check the plugs coming from the front case header to the mobo as well (since it's a 'power on' issue.)

I suspect that your comment about dropping things onto the computer several times is an indication that something got knocked loose inside the computer. I would unplug everything and reconnect it to make sure everything is connected properly and securely.

Also if you have cats or dogs, spray it out with a can of air while your inside the machine. Always a good idea at least once a year.

Perhaps, after checking connections, making sure nothing is loose and everything is clean/sprayed with a can of air; moving the system away from the dresser could help prevent this from happening in the future?
