So I just got xp install on my new system. (dfi nf4 ultra, 3000+venice, ocz gold pc3200 bh5 i think)

Anyhow I just started trying to overclock. And am following a few guides (most notably this one and the one from dfi-street).

I'm trying to find my max FSB. I set my CPU Multi to 6 and memory to 100 etc. I kept the stock voltage (1.39 according to mbm5) and I'm running superpi 32m cpu temp is 38C. I'm at FSB of 370... I thought it would have failed to boot a while ago... should I keep raising it? It hasnt failed to boot into windows yet and I'm running superpi just to see if it would fail there.

Btw what is acceptable chipset temp? I think mine is a bit high right now its at 47C it flucuates but I think 47 is the highest its been. (But this is also the longest I've run superpi) Dear god is the fan loud though 🙁

Ok just completed superpi 32m in like 33mins I think. I forgot to DL cpu-z on the new comp, so I'm gonna do that then try raising it some more.

Anyhow should I keep raising the FSB? I'm on air cooling, xp-90 with Panaflo ultra, and Antec p180. I have the top mount case fan blowing down into the CPU the rear mount blowing out and the front one for the upperchamber blowing in.
 
as long as your temp on full load is never greater than 65ºC, you're just about fine.

more than 20mins on Prime95 will prove an "almost succesful" overclocking.
 
ok the temps are staying low (the CPU that is) but... I was wondering if its unsafe/unhealthy for the chip for me to keep raising it like this lol? btw if it interest anyone I bought it last week from Monarch retail box. LBBLE 0517BPAW

Thats the guidelines for OCing Venices. Play a game for awhile and watch the temps, if they go above 65 C, stop and lower your speeds. Also, as long as you can boot up and arent running too hot and getting artifacts, your fine.
 
Alright I'll keep it going. Temps arnt really rising according to Smart Guardian and mbm5 staying at 38C while running superpi and dropping to like 32C after. Well I can't really run any games on it yet I don't have anything installed on there besides the bare minimum maybe I'll do that tomorrow.

btw soccerman just curious what are your chipset temps? Does your dry ice system include the chipset? I just wanna compare how mine is compared to others.

Up to 390 running Prime95.
 
Damn, I had a huge post ready to help you OC and I had a power surge. 🙁

Anyways, you cant compare my system to yours, Its a different core. My temps are 40-50 C when under load. I do not use the system in my sig now because I am off to college on Sept 1st. I am going to start designing a chilled water setup once the fall semester is over, but thats a different story.

Some general tips for OCing your comp:
1) get a Zalman CNPS7700-Cu fan for $35. Its the best fan out in my opinion.
2) dont raise voltage until you absolutely need to, because you risk the lifetime of the CPU being cut dramatically shorter.
3) turn on you AC and let the temp get to 60-65 F in your room. This can make the difference between 2800mhz and 2700mhz, on air.
4) when it gets cold outside, open up windows and let cold (50 F or lower outside) and let it cool down the room, because the cooler the air is around the fan, the more efficient it will be.
5) make sure your memory isnt going to hold you back, try to get your memory to 500-550mhz or so because that will boost fps just as much as raising the cpu 100mhz.

You should be able to get to 2.8ghz on air with the Zalman CNPS7700-Cu, if you know what your doing.

hehe yea I was following that trying to find my max FSB, but it hasn't failed yet which is why I posted. I dont wanna raise my FSB too high in fear of damaging something.

Well I'm using a xp-90, my CPU temps don't seem that high. Haha yea its pretty hot in my room 2 comps... tv... light... I wish I had AC lol.

Well I haven't even tried to OC the ram yet, but I'm sure I'll be back asking a ton more questions when I get to there. Since I'm already having trouble finding max FSB 😛
