Hi All-

I was hoping I could get some help from the experts around here. This is my first build in over 4 years so I'm out of the loop with this stuff but can you guys tell me if it's normal for my cpu temp to be hovering around 45 C with the Artic Freezer Pro 7? I wanted to OC this sucker to 3Ghz but seeing the temp as it is worries me. Did I do something wrong? I did use Artic Silver on both the cpu and heatsink.

I am reading the temps from both my BIOS(~48C) and Speedfan(45C).

My build is:

Q6600 GO
MSI 8800GT OC
4GB RAM
WD 250 SATA

It's all in a Coolermaster CM690 which I have not closed up yet.

Sounds high for an idle temp. The Freezer 7 has a push-pin mounting system right? Are you sure all the pins are in all the way?
 
That's what I was thinking too which is why I did not attempt to push the CPU to 3ghz. I was hoping I didn't have to take everything out and re-install the HSF but that might be my only option.

So I guess it's not normal then especially for idle temps.
 
Well, usually people report lower temps, but if you are sitting in the middle of the desert with ambient temps of 40c, then I'd say you're idling at VERY nice temperatures. Yes, that was sarcasm, more info would be needed. Is speedstep/eist enabled ? Is the fan running at full speed ? Intake/Exhaust fans all hooked up and running ? I think there's multiple ways to orientate the AC7 PRO, so how did you install it ? Some people HATE pushpins, and will suggest a bolt through kit, which I think is rather cheap and could help you lower temps.

While sitting at the BIOS screen the CPU generates more heat than sitting at the desktop in Windows. Try using Coretemp at the desktop with no load and compare.
 
Nothing derwen ? I said those bolt thru kits are rather cheap, and could help lower temps? So it's a viable option that might be worth trying.

When in windows if the cpu is not busy, a process called 'System Idle Process' uses the CPU HLT instruction which reduces power and effective makes the chip run cooler. This has been featured on every NT OS (supported in 5.0 aka 2000). Some of you may remember a program called 'Cool CPU' that was popular before (Win9x) that made the cpu run cooler and it essentially was doing the same thing as long as the motherboard was ACPI compliant.

Sooo, it's not really cranked up, just not cranked back via Windows.

Same temperatures I'm getting with a Freezer 7 Pro (watercooling STILL on hold until I get the time between classes and work...). One of the push pins just WILL NOT go in no matter what I try. I've reinstalled it 3-4 times; I'm afraid of I keep going, I'll ruin the pins.

Give me a bolt-through cooler any day. 🙁
 
So I went back and took everything apart. I did install the hsf backwards so air was actually blowing into the case rather than out the back. I cleaned off the artic silver and re-applied it to both the cpu and heatsink. I also discovered that the hsf was not completely attached to the mobo. Looking back, I did a pretty shoddy job putting this pc together.

So when I booted the pc up, the cpu temp was reading 48 degrees! WTF?! I thought I did everything right this time around. I decided to leave the pc on overnight and noticed that the temps dropped to 27 C the next morning! I'm not sure what happened either. I did update the BIOS but I can't believe that would have such a significant impact. So I oc'd the quad to 3ghz and it's running nice and cool at 28 C idle now.

I can't say I know what happened so any of you have any ideas?

AS5 takes at least 12 hours on load temps to properly set. Congrats.
 
the proper way to apply AS5 is a little grain size blob on the middle of the cpu.

You dont apply it to both the cpu and heat sink. This is why i said i think you applied too much of it.

Anyhow, since your temps are good, i wouldnt change anything on it. Whatever you did, somehow got it to hold, and by tinkering with it, you can lose it.

Aigomorla - I think I did put a little too much AS5 the first time but it did not spill out to the sides.

I still applied it to both the cpu and hsf but put on less this time around. I'm certainly not complaining but was just curious why it did what it did.
