Is this mechanic trying to cheat my friend?

my friend's transmission started acting up today, she told me it wouldn't go over 35mph, and that it kicks into neutral when she hits that speed. it's a 99 V6 mustang, the mechanic said that her overdrive was fried and it would cost $1400 to fix. I don't see how overdrive has anything to do with it considering it doesn't even go into third. Anyone have any ideas?

well, you didn't give any details so it's hard to speculate now isn't it? 🙂

but lockup happens around that speed so yeah there could be a problem in that whole thing......or not. who knows?!

SPECIFICS!!!!!! 🙂

that is about as much detail as i could get out of her, she isn't exactly car savvy. She also lives in TN so i can't go over and take a look myself

Does it have a blue oval with the f-word in white anywhere on the car?
There's your problem right there. 🙂

<< When you talk about that kind of money, get a second opinion, or third. Hard to diagnose over the 'net. >>

i know it's hard to diagnose, but i didn't think the overdrive would have anything to do with not being able to go into third, which was why i asked here

Well, obviously something is fscked up. $1400 sounds a bit high (I got a whole new tranny for about that) but newer cars are expensive to work on so it may be reasonable. Find a mechanic in your town you trust and ask his opinion.

Overdrive is just another gear. It just means the gear ratio is less than 1. So, yes, it may have something to do with it. Is this auto or stick? How many speed? Sounds like auto and 3rd is the highest gear before OD?

i know what overdrive is 😉 it'll go to second but not third or OD, it's a 4 speed auto so yes third is the gear before the OD. it goes into second, then clicks into neutral when it hits 35mph. so i don't see why the overdrive would be hosed when it won't even engage third, and it also doesn't make any sense to me as to why it would klick into neutral at 35mph, which isn't even redline in second i'm guessing. if the overdrive gear were damaged somehow i'd think that it just wouldn't be able to engage overdrive, or it would grind the gears, somethign like that

If it's a 99 isn't it still under warranty? $1400 sounds steep, but it might be worth it to get it into writing (no overage past 10% or whatever) in case it's more than one gear that's out (3 & overdrive)

her warranty ended a month ago 🙁

That sucks.
I'm assuming this is an automatic. If you leave the shifter in "2", does it still act up over 35?

ok, this makes a bit more sence. she just told me that if she turns OD off she can drive normally without it going into neutral, but that the mechanic told her not to go over 40mph without OD 😕

when you say it works normally when OD is off, does that mean completely normal? If the OD is turned off and it runs the way it should, then your OD is probably bad. Might want to get a second oppinion (as mentioned earlier) because that's alot of money when it could be something simple like a computer control board or something.

$1400 is not that high for the modern automatic transmisson. Almost every company out there uses electronic trannies and they are exspensive as hell.

my friend's car overdrive stopped working.. I remeber him telling me that it cost like 800 to fix and when his car was around 3rd or something, it would shake like a manual car when you don't shift correctly.
