Is this machine good for basic net surfing and burning cd's?

k62 400
128mb of ram
built in video
built in sound
3 gig hard drive.
this person has a 56k modem so he wont need anymore than a 3 to 5 gig hard drive. it will only have burning software, Word, and some music software like realplayer and musicmatch and stuff.
 
That should be fine. My grandma has a PC with almost the same specs. What kind of burner does it have. If you are buying one, then I highly suggest getting one with some kind of burn proof technology. Slow systems sometimes have a hard time keeping up with the burner.
 
I did pretty much the same thing with AMD K-6 2 300 with only 64 mb of RAM for awhile. I was building a main rig, so this suited me fine for 2 months. It never gave me any problems.
 
If you are looking for something cheap check out an Aopen 20x over at newegg. You can get them for $71. They have the burn proof technology and come with Nero which is my favorite burning program. Nero itself cost $70 from Best Buy. Here is a direct link.

ditto, but there is no way it would of worked for me without having burnproof
 
im not quite sure what kind of burner i am getting. i am looking for something cheap.

What is your definition of cheap? price range would help us out on recommending a burner for you
 
I would say that the hard drive is to small. Most of the older computers are better at copying the cd or what ever to the harddrive first and then burning it to cd. I agree you do need burnproof technology on a cdr for that system.

There are lots of Browsers which will run on PCs with much lower spec'ed processors than that... IE5.5 and Opera both spring to mind.

What is he going to record with that computer? Multimedia is pretty much ruled out with such slow setup. I'm sure there is absolutely no reason to backup the computer if its for surfing the net...

Exactly.. I can surf the web on a old 486 50 mhz laptop with 32 mb's of RAM using Opera. I also have a 180 mhz with 64 mb's of RAM running IE6. It's not the fastest, but you certainly don't need a 800 mhz machine to surf the net.

BTW.. If you use the burner on this system, make sure that the DMA is enabled and don't touch the computer while it's burning if it's a IDE burner. A burner with burn proof would help to, so you don't get the dreaded buffer underrun.

I have a K62/350mhz and it runs the net fine as well as burning cds. My burner is really "old" by todays standards too, no burn-proof, not fast, but it has been reliable(4x2x24x). I just make sure that I'm not running anything else at the time.
 
My dad does all of this with a pentium-133 and 64 megs of ram. He only has a two gig hard drive, but our whole house is networked so he just uses either the 60 gigs on my brother's box, or the 120 gigs on mine.

But, for the most part, his computer does just fine burning CD's (we have a plextor CD burner - a SCSI one) and surfing the internet. Neither of those activities really take a lot of power (with the exception of some of the flash/shockwave web sites, but with 56k modem those are largly worthless anyways...) so I think you'll do fine with a k6-2 400, which is worlds faster than a p-133.

Yup, used to be my main machine for a loong time. That and a 12x Plextor and Yamaha 400T CD-R drive. No problems with surfing the net or using office apps at the same time than burning.

If I can recommend an OS: try to find a cheap copy of NT 4.0 somewhere.
