Who saves their text messages? After i get one i delete it.
If it is something you want to remember then spend like 10 seconds of your life repeating it in your head. Can't possibly be a shopping list.
As for pictures, well I suppose if your the type of person that goes around school saying "Look at my new car, Look at this awesome guitar I got or dude! check out my Girlfriend!" transfer them to a computer or print them out.

No, they can't.

Yes they can. Nothing illegal going on here.

Kids have very few rights once on school property. And in reality the constitution doesn't even apply to them.

Won't anyone think of the children? They hand out condoms in school but won't let the kids have cell phones or pray!
This is the most retarded freakin' comment. They don't set aside time in schools to hand out condoms. Kids can pick them up when they have time. Prayer is not banned from schools. You can pray all the live long day in school. They are just not setting aside a special little time for it. You also have a tax exempt place (known as a church) open all times of the day where you can congregate and pray all the live long day with your buddies. As far as cell phones, they are banned because they are a serious distraction and get in the way of teaching students. Kids are in school to learn, right?

*Taps JackBurton's sarcasm meter"

During my last year of HS the Administration put a rule in place that allowed cell phones on campus but they were to be silenced / turned off during class. One disruption and you would loose the cell phone.
My sarcasm meter is VERY sensitive when comments like that are made. Some comments are so ridiculous you'd think they are joking, but they are being serious.

<= Goes and calibrates his meter ever so slightly.

Or put a password lock on your phone and tell them to piss off.

Under what law, specifically relating to minors?

Under the "its my personal property and if you take it you are stealing from me" law.

I can think of several scenarios where, if cell phones were widely available as they are now, I could have used one outside of school. If I rode a bus to school and relied on making a phone call to someone to pick me up after school/practice/work, whatever, where am I going to keep my cell phone while at school?

Delete any evidence as you go along...erase those text messages!

No, you provide the law that allows them... Burden of proof. The idea that minors have no rights is ridiculous.

Confiscating and searching are not the same.

if the dogs detect anything they can search your stuff and take your cell phone
This is essentially the definition of probable cause.

Just make sure you delete your text messages and have the phone on silent all day. I carried a phone and/or pager every day for three years in high school, but was never caught once with them. If a drug dog is sniffing around and it smells something on you, well, you probably have bigger problems than your cell phone being taken. ;)

If you're carrying a banned item on school property (like a cell phone), they certainly can decide to take a peak at your text messages.

Cellphones were prohibited at my school, but most teachers don't really care. As long as you keep it to lunch time then I was fine. It was necessary to have one if you didn't drive. More convenient and safe to have one if you walked homed or were picked up from school.

They have every right to confiscate your cell phone during school hours. Don't like it, don't bring a cell phone. I'm not *sure* about the reading your text messages, but just put a password on your phone if you must bring it to school.

bring a note from your parents asking to allow you to leave it in your locker.

You have rights at school, they're just limited (if anyone is wondering on the term, it's in loco parentis).

Don't confuse no rights with limited rights :) And if a dog suspects something, that's probable cause, so don't carry drugs or meat in your pockets.
