So I am service tech at Fry's Electronics. We are opening up a store in Fishers, IN. I was told by my deptartment manager that I could bring in my computer to use to train with. We were gonna dual boot it and show people how that works. I came in the front door, made sure it was ok to bring it in. I filled out the paperwork saying that I brought it in and I am allowed to leave with it. I even talked to the head manager and I told him that we were training on dual booting today, he said OK. We went through our day... a basically normal work day.

Here's what I'm pissed about.

When I was leaving... I took the proper forms with me and the loss prevention manager stopped me and told me he was going to take possession of my computer for an investigation. He told me he was worried employees were stealing corporate information. I said ok, but if he was going to take possession of my belongings that I'd like to have the police involved. He refused. I went and talked to the head manager, I said that I'd like to take my stuff out and if the police weren't involved I think it's my choice to leave it with you, and your choice if you want to investigate somehow later.

He then said, it's your choice if you want to work here or not.

Then he said he'd vouche for me this one time and get me out the door with it but not to bring computers or anything like that back.

I hope I haven't lost my job.

wow. Sounds like the one guy will stick up for you, but I'd agree with him that you probably shouldn't bring any more computers in to work with you.

They seem to be pretty touchy.

You need to go back and kick the loss prevention manager in the nads. That's BS.

I think it was a bad idea to bring in your own personal computer in the first place (but I'm sure you realize that now). I would think that since you already signed paperwork saying you could leave with it, that you could, you know....leave with it....?

You need to rethink who you're working for. And don't EVER take your stuff into their store again, no matter what the circumstances, unless you have proof of purchase stashed somewhere they don't know about.

We didn't really have a fully working test computer.

and btw...

People bring in their computers everyday... it's because we aren't open yet. Steve, a guy in computers brings his laptop in every single day and they've never given him crap. Yes I agree it's a bad idea now... but I was following other peoples examples.

It wasn't the computer itself they were worried about - it was what was on it.

I really doubt he needed to "inspect" anything. If you left it with this guy I'm sure something would have been "lost".
Anyway make sure you keep ALL of those forms you filled out and make copies, they may prove useful yet.
