i signed up for comcast hi speed internet a month ago in the seattle area. around 2 weeks ago i started recieving windows pop ups that were advertisements. They used something called "Windows Messenger Service" (not msn messenger) and basically it looks like a windows dialog box with some non-selectable text and an OK button.
Apparently, some company named www.netpopup.net is selling a program that can spam whole ip addresses with an advertisement. Is this legal? Can i sue for invasion of privacy? IT is F-iretr-UCKING annoying when i am playing some warcraft 3 and all the sudden i am alt-tabbed out and seeing some goddamn ad.
I seriously want to sue these guys, but if that is not within my limits, does anyone know how to stop these intrusions? I have the windows xp firewall on, but no firewall program. My cable modem is a motorola surfboard 5100 (not sure if it comes with a firewall) and i do not have a network installed. I vaguely remember using this messenger service at my high school library... we would run some command line prompt that would send a popup window to another computer located on the network.
Anyways, the ads are coming in every 30-45 minutes now, and it is really pissing me off, so if anyone can help me with this problem (or relate with me) that would be super de duper.
