Is this just not cool?

So I posted this on Reddit.

It's not mine (wish it was) but its pretty cool--it's a Pirate LEGO CG film which I think is extremely well bloody done.

SO whats ATOTs verdict?

It's alright. I think it could be a winner of a show for the under 6 crowd. I thought the acting was pretty bad, and the CGI not as impressive as some I've seen.

Can't believe I watched that.

It was rendered well...it just wasn't conceived well. The dialog and performances are absolutely terrible.

It'd be cool if it was actual legos with stop motion. Yeah I know it'd be damn near impossible, but the fact that the video was all cg just took away from the "coolness".

Just felt like I was watching a sat morning cartoon for 6 year olds.

idk, maybe you're a diff generation (35-45?) but I think the CG is a cool touch.

Do you know how hard CG actually is? If anything, CG is harder than stop motion--and stop motion is very hard to pull off well.

Using CG/FMV to create a video clip of something truly life-like is impressive. Think Blizzard/SWTOR video clips.

Using actual lego pieces to create a world and making a video using those real pieces is impressive because it takes time to build w/ legos.

However, using a computer to create a lego video just seems like cheating. You're not doing any of the hard work (putting legos together)...the computer is. CG videos are hard when you try to create something life-like. A CG video of lego pieces is, imo, a lot easier since it lacks the detail you would see in a good CG video.

Also, CG videos like blizzard's and SWTOR cost well into the hundreds of millions. I highly doubt that the lego one you linked cost that much and probably wasn't anywhere nearly as difficult to create as a blizzard/swtor cg.

It's for those reasons I felt the lego clip was lackluster at best and resembled a silly saturday morning cartoon for kids.

I mean, it has 10 million views, it's minecraft characters modeled in Maya (a 3D modeling/animation program) and yet by your standards, it's not cool.

Or is it?

Dude, autotuned music?! That by itself precludes ANYTHING from being cool :^D

Here's an old CGI video I always liked. I watched it last night, and it didn't grab me like it once did, but maybe it's cool; I may just be jaded and cynical.
