So, I USED to have a couple connections with a prospective employer. While they were working at said company, they had tried to get me a job there with them. Thru them I had met their (then) manager and struck up a (albeit small) report with him. I had even interviewed and was selected for the job and filled out paperwork (temp agency) to begin working before the positions were abruptly pulled due to a re-org.

Well, they got fired a couple weeks ago.

So.....I emailed their old manager yesterday asking if they had any openings. He's no longer that group manager, but he said he'd check with the current group manager to see if and what was available, and asked for a copy of my resume.

Now, the 2 friends that worked there, are really more of aquaintences, as we don't hang out, or even really speak but on occasion where I may see them on MSN I'll ask them what's up. We all worked together at a previous company for a short time.

So, is it shady of me to try and swoop in on their recent dismissal? I would think not, I would hope not. Really, even if it was slightly, it wouldn't change my pursuit of the position as the job is EXCELLENT in terms of the experience I'd gain and other little details such as PAY.

I believe the word you are looking for is "rapport."

Other than that, no, it is not wrong or unethical to go for a job in that compnay, should one exist. If times get better then you should try to pay back their earlier effort. Or at least buy them a beer, if you get a job.

If you don't take the job, they will still fill the positions anyways. So your friends are still SOL. So go for it. Besides, you have no idea whether or not your friends (or aquaintances) are slackers, bad workers, etc. You shouldn't be punished for their misfortune.

You didn't get your friends/acquaintances fired, and you didn't apply for any of their jobs until after they were gone. There is no reason you shouldn't apply for the job.

OTOH, if the job you want requires good writing skills, you may want to bone up on your spelling and punctuation skills before you take any written test for the gig. You have a few missing and extra commas and:

aquaintences = acquaintances
report = rapport

Sorry for playing spelling cop, but if it's necessary to get the job, I hope the reminder helps. Good luck. :)

< Update> Hmmm... I knew it looked odd as soon as I saw that someone else beat me to the post while I was writing. :)
