Is this illegal?

Is it illegal for me, as a 19 year old in Canada, to ship alcohol to myself to a U.S. address? I would be the intended recipient.

I vote yes. I'm not even sure if it's legal to ship alcohol across borders, & definately not to a minor. Just drive it in like everyone else does. Of course you'll have to bring a friend of age along.

if you are a minor coming back to the USA, you can't buy alcohol to bring back. I would say illegal as well. unless you have a 21 year old roomate... paging edro13

You can't ship or recieve alchohol without a liquor license, period. (There are exceptions when the shipper is a licensed distributor). Even if that's not the law in Canada, you'd need a liquor license to receive it in the US.

So, the age or shipping across the border really doesn't come into play.

I bought a bunch of wine and sake without thinking about it in HK, went through customs and of course they had to go through my stuff. The guy was a d!ck, and he was like alcohol, hmmm how old are you (18 at the time). He let me go with it though. I also had to spend 10 minutes explaining to him about Grass Jelly and how it was just a little joke gift not a fvcking bomb.

Just fscking ship it, christ.

They don't know whats in the box
customs often opens packages, or they x-ray them.
Yeah, shipping it across the border definately increases the chance..

I don't think its illegal.. You can buy alcohol online and have it shipped to you, can't you?

Illegal.

I'm not sure if it's a confiscate-and-scold offense, a happy-new-year-have-a-big-fine offense, or if you get to be a late Christmas gift to Bubba, but in any case you'd be better off buying your booze at home.

I am confused how is grass jelly a joke and how can anyone think it is a bomb.

Okay, before I start ridiculing you, was that post a joke? How do some of you people operate out there in the real world? 😛

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to ship it to yourself in the majority of states, because it's illegal to provide alcohol to someone under 21. You'd be providing it to yourself, breaking the law.

Also, corrections to things above:
You don't need a liquor license to have liquor shipped to you as a general rule - it varies from state to state.
There's been a big thing in recent years about how some states do NOT allow wine shipped through their states, even if destined for another state... It seems to break the clause in the constitution which says states can't regulate interstate commerce... However, there are many places that DO ship out wine to other states.. but it's illegal to receive it in some states.

No, no joke. Being part asian I eat grass jelly all the time. So I don't see what is so funny about it. Infact this morning I ate a can of grass jelly.

Shipping anything to yourself would always set off some red flag and cause them to investigate. No reason why John Doe can't ship it to you though. Then if it doesn't get delivered and any issues arise you can always deny knowing why John Doe tried to ship you booze.

Nah, I'm talking about sarcasm/creative (or at least trying to be 😛) story telling/etc. How could you possibly think that the guy seriously thought it was a bomb? I mean cmon, use your noggin.

And do you really eat grass jelly all of the time? I brought it back as a joke, but I never actually figured people ate that stuff. Guess we just have some radically different tastes. 🙂

I did, two different kinds. One was just plain grass jelly, and the other was some kinda bean grass jelly. Both were horrible. I also got a green bean flavored ice cream bar over there, and it really did taste like green beans.

I sent some in a care package to Iraq, just helping out a friend. Yes it was risky and it was in a different container.

There are different rules for wine, beer, and hard liquor. I figured it was stupid to ship beer, too bulky and too easy to obtain in the states. It's possible he wants to ship wine, but I don't know many 19 year olds who drink enough wine to want it from Canada. That leaves hard liquor, which is what my post was about. Perhaps the OP could clarify what he wants to ship.
