Is this HDD operating normal??

After reading a while and have discovered it by myself definetly the best desktop HDD (entry level) are the samsungs (among seagate n' maxtor).....but well that's not point, i was just saying that because my previous HDD was a 80Gb samsung and rarely failed after 2 months..... That was so tough recover all my files back.

I'm so confused, and very dissapointed with my new HDD a Maxtor Diamond+9 80GB 2MB (6YO80LO) I bought one month ago, there are two things that really pissed me off, I've got ActiveSMART installed on my PC and everytime I run it, It Says " detected an attribute change", the attributes that have changed so far are Spin Up Time: from 255 to 227 and "seek time performance" from 255 to 249, with samsung never happened that, it obviously demonstrates a fast wear in the HDD. And last but not least yesterday the HDD is doing some audible tearing when it's spining.... taking into account it was plenty quiet.

What should I Do?
Is normal With maxtor drives??

Thanks in Advance!
forgive my poor english

The Samsungs are a lot more quiter than the Maxtor. I had ActiveSMART running on my computer and for some reason it used to display the same message as yours "detected attribute change" a unit decline in the number of hours or something. I wouldnt really worry about those numbers cause my HDD has been working for years with those displays without a problem. Though I have always been ready to put my hand on my head.
Are you sure the sound is new and has not been a persistent one? Most Maxtor HDDs have a characteristic noise. It may not necessarily indicate a problem.

Believe me, it was very quiet, I could not even hear it.....but suddenly (from yesterday) when the HDD is working hard (copying a big File) it tears louder.
