My only guess at a possible scenario would be as follows:

A. CDs worked perfectly for the longest time..
B. =Something= happened to all of them ("poop" happens)..
C. You ripped the CDs successfully even though =something= was wrong with them..
D. You returned them, but because of B, it SEEMS as if C caused the issue, but it was coincidental..

That is MOST likely the TYPE of scenario that occured -- whether it's PERFECTLY accurate or not -- there are just not too many other viable explanations..
