I'm thinking of buying this NEC DV-5800C/MXL]http://www.newegg.com/app/Viewproduct.asp?DEPA=1&submit=manufactory&catalog=55&manufactory=1326&description=&srchFor=dvd[/L][/L] DVD-ROM but neither NewEgg nor the NEC website list whether the drive is UDMA or PIO. Does anyone here know which mode this drive operates in? Thanks.

Udma or Pio is what you set in windows man. And, most all cdrom/dvdrom drives are ata33 or 66 max so...It doesnt really matter that much, cause you cant get that kind of ripp speed anyways. But you set it in windows..

If the firmware of an ATAPI drive only supports PIO4 mode then you won't be able to set it in Windows for any more than that. My wife's Lite-On 12x10x32 burner is only a multiword dma 2 drive and some CDs just choke on it. I want to make sure BEYOND ALL DOUBT that any new drive I get is at least a DMA33 or better drive.
