Is this crazy?

I have a perfectly stable G0 Q6600 at 400x9 but want more. (CPU)

So I requested a QX9650. It's expensive but 400x10 sounds doable. The extra 4MB cache seems to help out with encoding which is 95% of what the box does. Is this unreasonable?

If the $1000 price tag is worth whatever increase in encoding power you get, then I suppose it's reasonable. That's really something for you to decide, not us. What advantage do you get from having your encoding done 10-20% faster? In other words, is this a business environment, or does it just make it slightly more convenient for you to encode?

I would have waited for the release of the Q9450 myself, but that's just me. I can't see overpaying $1000 for a CPU, especially one that will become obsolete in 6 months, like they all do.

400x10 is very doable, I am doing it right now. I'm coming from an G0 X3230 that did 400x9 stable, and I don't regret it.

Remember that a 4 ghz yorkfield is like having a 4.4 ghz kentsfield, so you are really gaining nearly 800 mhz of performance clock vs. clock

Bottom line though unless you are doing this for sheer enthusiasm, gaining a few minutes at encoding isn't going to change your life, but you will be 800 bucks short (assuming you sell the Q6600). Is there something else you want to tell us about your encoding endeavors?

Well of course and even crazier is the QX6700's are priced nearly the same time we picked them up December 2006! The premium comes from that unlocked multiplier.

X38 has finally broken the wall of low FSB with quads so locked multi's are more attractive to o/c.

I hate waiting 20 minutes for a process to finish. So if it saves 2-4 minutes that is a huge deal to me! Less blisters on the feet from tapping. 😉

someone that thinks just like me. I have 4 raptors in raid0 to cut even the smallest of loading time on anything i do.
