I want to build a NAS server. will use it to download movies and steam to my ipad and other mobile devices

this is the cpu and motherboard i want to buy.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128598

my question is: after I get the movie downloaded on my server. before streaming to ipad, do you need to transcode them first? if you do, is my CPU powerful enough to do that?

I will use openmediavault. waht the best app out there for steaming and transcoding?

I don't have the answer whether this cpu is powerful enough for the type of transcoding that you want to do, but why would you use this particular board? I would go for a 1037u for sure.

very low power consumption. check all the reviews. also recommended by other users.

Remember the difference between idle and load. That board is not much lower than a regular setup in idle. I would buy a LGA1150 miniITX board and a Haswell Celeron/Pentium that you can also use quicksync function with for fast transcode.

I am aware of the power consumption of the 1007u...the difference in it and a 1037u is something like 1.5 or 2 watts. I think the greater processing power is going to be way more than worth it for such a small amount of difference. In the end you are going to have to end up upgrading the board earlier, which will more than destroy whatever you have saved in power
