Is This CPU overheating

Can anybody help ?
Just put together a AMD 64 3000 on a MSI Neo Mobo and am worried about the CPU temp - 62 degrees C (when idle). When I remove the sides of the case it drops to 55 degrees C (still idling).
I darent even play any games for fear of how high it might go !
The cooler came with the CPU (standard stock AMD retail) which is running at 3100rpm the case is Lian Li ( 3 case fans ) and the ambient temp is around 32 degrees C
Am I worrying for no reason or is this a bit high for this kind of set up

That idle temp does seem too high, but I think those chips are designed for temps up to around 80C.

It sounds like the case cooling could be the problem, as the temp drops 7C when you remove the side panels. But you've got 3 case fans with a good case (Lian Li), and that should be adequate.

Do you have any lockups when playing games or stressing the CPU?

NO - not had any lock ups playing need for speed or running 3D Mark - I will run them and check the temp then !

I would have thought the AMD would be OK but I can do that - do you recommend any good ones !
 
ambient is 32 C? Do you mean the motherboard, inside case temp, or the actual room air temp? Because 32 C is very high. Either way, reducing the ambient temperature will help greatly.

How are your fans positioned? You might want to add another fan and see if that helps, as the drop in temp when you remove the side panels is quite significant. Also, are the fans in the correct orientation? The front fans should be intakes, and the rear fans should be exhausts.

Regardless, while 62C idle is high, as long as you aren't experiencing any lockups, it should be fine. It could just be that your CPU sensor reads high, or somehing along those lines. Or, even if it that high, the CPU can still handle it judging from the stability of the system. Still, if you'd rather play it safe, try lowering the ambient temp, checking the fans, adding more fans if need be, or if those don't help, acquiring a new heatsink.

As far as heatsinks go, I'm a bit out of the loop, but ThermalRight makes excellent heatsinks that work with 80mm fans, so you get better cooling with less noise. They're fairly cheapish too.
 
Ambient temp is actually 30 its a warmish day - Motherboard temp is 32 with the sides off and 42 with them on - just cleaned the front filter (which was clogged with dust) and moved the hard drives down in front of the 2 front fans which seems to have helped as it now 54 with the sides on - Is that enough !
 
A common problem with many mobos is that they read the cpu temp incorrectly. Lots of times a newer bios will fix this, the MSI site should have what you need. It sounds strange that you have a case temp of 30 and a cpu temp of 54. A quick way to test this would be to see how hot the heatsink feels when the computer is on, if it just feels warm then the mobo is misreading the temp...only if it feels hot should you be concerned.
 
I have just rebooted after leaving the PC off for an hour and the CPU temp is showing the same as it was when I switched it off so it seems the sensor is not working - I dont trust the case sensor either as that reports 40 degrees now - the CPU cooler only feels warm to to touch and I dot have any stability problems.
Should I try to get a replacement mobo as it is only a month old and where is the sensor that reports the case temperature !

If after settling the problems with your temp readings you are still getting 7C drop in temp with removing case door you should definately look at ways to improve case airflow. (ie cutting out stock fan grills, cable management, etc.)

My case actually runs cooler with the door closed (after modding a bit)
