Monkey =/= a specific person. Obama did not write the stimulus package. This is clearly a reference to the (perceived) idiocy of the bill and the chimp shooting incident.

Shhh...we don't let things like facts get in the way of hysteria around here.

Can you please point out this hysteria to me? I just don't see it.

At the time of this post, 15 people have voted that yes it is racist. Fortunately, 41 have voted no. And of course, Al Sharpton has declared it a racist attack.

On inauguration day I received a text message from a friend stating, "I keep changing all the channels but all they're showing is that part of Planet of the Apes where they take over the white house."

So yeah.. this picture brought that comment to mind.

/has very racist friends

Yeah... so you like to toss the word "hysteria" around pretty lightly, huh? ;)

Not in my mind, no. I wouldn't have made the racial connection had you not mentioned it; the cartoon does not seem to be suggesting that Obama is a monkey (which is racist to a certain extent), but rather that the stimulus package is so stupid it could only have been written by a chimp (which is not racist).

Interesting how people have different interpretations.

My first thought was Obama. Travis the chimpanzee in CT has zero relevance with the stimulus bill and trying to make fun of the killing when someone was seriously injured is in horrible taste.

I have no clue how folks think the monkey represents congress.

Because The President of the United States does not write bills. That act is left to Congress...

Only if you equate black people to monkeys in your head and then get offended when someone else doesn't

He had no input into the bill? He also signed it into law.

NY Post cartoon seems to link Obama to dead chimp

NEW YORK ? A New York Post cartoon that appears to link President Barack Obama to a violent chimpanzee drew outrage Wednesday from civil rights leaders and elected officials who said it echoed racist stereotypes of blacks as monkeys.

The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers, one with a smoking gun, standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. The caption reads: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

The cartoon refers to a chimpanzee named Travis who was killed Monday by police in Stamford, Conn., after it mauled a friend of its owner.

Obama signed his administration's economic stimulus plan on Tuesday.

Critics called the cartoon racist and said it trivialized a tragedy in which a woman was disfigured and a chimpanzee killed. Many urged a boycott of the Post and the companies that advertise in it.

"How could the Post let this cartoon pass as satire?" said Barbara Ciara, president of the National Association of Black Journalists. "To compare the nation's first African-American commander in chief to a dead chimpanzee is nothing short of racist drivel."

The Rev. Al Sharpton called the cartoon "troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys."

Sharpton planned to picket the Post on Thursday along with others.

Col Allan, editor-in-chief of the Post, defended the work.

"The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut," Allan said in a statement. "It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist."

The cartoon drew hundreds of comments on the Internet including at the liberal Huffington Post, where columnist Sam Stein wrote: "At its most benign, the cartoon suggests that the stimulus bill was so bad, monkeys may as well have written it. Most provocatively, it compares the president to a rabid chimp."

It is not the first time that Delonas, the longtime cartoonist for the Post's Page Six, has raised eyebrows with a heavy-handed caricature.

An earlier Delonas cartoon made fun of Paul McCartney's ex-wife Heather Mills for having only one leg, and another compared gay people seeking marriage licenses to sheep lovers. In a cartoon last month, an enormous Jessica Simpson dumps boyfriend Tony Romo for Ronald McDonald.

The responsibility of writing bills falls to Congress, not the President. The President can sign or veto legislation. He may champion certain legislation and even have input on what he'd like to see. But make no mistake, this bill was written by a small cadre of Dems led by Pelosi in the House and Reid in the Senate.

I immediately made the connection the OP is asking about. It's not a bunch of monkeys that got shot in the cartoon. Just one monkey. Obama may not have personally written the stimulus bill, but he championed it. Cartoon monkey = Obama was the first thought I had. I can hardly believe that was the cartoonist's intention though.

To the crazy, hyper-sensitive people: yes. People are lazy and will look for the easiest explanation. Cartoonist is retarded if he/she didn't think that link would be made.

Bigger issue is that it isn't funny. I don't mind "offensive" cartoons if they are funny.
