so about 1 year ago, me and my then gf applied for an amex card togehter. She was a student and had no credit, so we put it under my name......................we put me as the main cardholder, and she was my wife....(I think that was the only way for her to get a card).

Today, the card company called and said that there was a balance that needs to be paid asap. I'm gonna go ahead and pay for it tommorow........

the thing is that while we were together, we put her home adress and phone number and stuff....today, on the phone, we updated the account under my name phone number, etc etc. The agent on the phone asked if I was married. I said no....

so I"m kind of worried that me saying she was my "wife" back then when we applied would get me in trouble.......is that illegal or considered credit fraud or whatever? or am I just over reacting?

btw, I"m gonna cancel the card tommorow..........:)

uh. you lied on your card application. that can't be good. then you let a card in your name be in your EX gf's possession. damn.

Well, you did commit fraud by stating that you were married when you weren't at all. Marriage is a legally binding contract and stating that you're married when you're not is a big deal. I wouldn't worry too much, but I simply don't understand why you just handed out your credit to your girlfriend that you broke up with.. That's one of the stupidest decisions I've ever heard of anyone making.

You should cancel the card right away to avoid any future headaches.

Judging by his stupidity at handing out credit to any willy nilly chick he meets on the street, I'm guessing he did NOT.

yes, that is my fault.........we were together when we did the card, and when we broke up, I forgot about that..........

but what I'm concerend and more worried about is if what I did is something considered bad enough for prison or large fines and whatnot...........

Probably not. You are stupid though. And now you know how honest your ex really is - racking up a CC bill AFTER you break up. What a dumb bitch.

Your dumb mistake could have been much worse - your ex could have wrecked your credit history and could have prevented you from qualifying for a car loan or a mortgage. Luckily it didn't go that far, but it could have.

how many people here think of a credit card they only applied for a while back when they break up with their SO ? If he used it himself with her all the time... then sure... but you don't know the whole story.

How much was the bill she racked up? (And yes, I agree that it was mind-numbingly stupid as hell to let your ex rack up a bill that you're obligated to pay...)

Why did you let it go all this time? Why didnt you close the card or atleast change the account number? Also, why not ask her to pay off what she owns?!

This is a unwritten rule but it should be followed at all times. Never, ever, post that you did something illegal on Anandtech. You're going to be flamed/ripped a new one. :)

I'm pretty sure it's written somewhere....like in hundreds of other posts.
