Is this Asus Z87 Pro an RMA Candidate?

New System trouble from the get go. Unknown if it's me or the board.

Presently have:
Windows 8 64 bit
Haswell 4670
Corsair 1866 2 x 8 dimm
Asus Z87 Pro
WD Blue 250 Gig 7200 new hard drive
2008 top of line (then) Seasonic 500W PD

All connections are tight. The DVD player does work. SATA in AHCI mode.

MB CD fails to boot or run for driver installation. Instead a DOS message shows.
Windows 8 CD fails to load Windows due to lack of SATA drivers. Nothing to load to without SATA drivers (am thinking).
Unable to load Sata Drivers off the flash drive because though the flash shows on the Windows 8 browse feature and the drivers and their folders show, the message is: there is no device with drivers.

Asus rep Melaku says needs chip set driver--then bios would recognize MB CD. Catch 22, thinking, because also, of course, unable to load chip set driver without loading windows.

hair turning from gray to white. RMA or is there a solution? Any help appreciated.

What SATA ports are you using?

Z87 only supports 6 SATA devices, and the Asus Z87 Pro has 8. The extra two (the black ones I believe) are provided by an ASMedia ASM1061 controller. If you have your drives plugged into the black ports, try moving them to two of the gold ports.

About the only thing I can think of also.....Other than corrupt windows media.

Anyways, you were told in the other thread, you DO NOT boot off of the mobo driver CD.

You DO boot off of the OS installation disc. Have you tried that? Is your BIOS set to AHCI mode? Do you have Windows 8 "Fast Boot" or "Secure boot" enabled? Do you have your DVD drive set to UEFI boot mode or regular BIOS boot mode?

With Windows 8 .. you shouldn't have to install a SATA driver to install the OS.

If you go into the boot section of your BIOS check and see if for your CD (and HD) if its showing them as an option that starts with UEFI.


If so you can try changing them to the option (that should have some comment making it obvious its your HD and Optical drive) without the UEFI listed.

based on that reply - that asus rep melaku does not know nothing - what a waste of tech support.

only rma if you are sure the sata port are bad. which is highly unlikely as there are multip sata port to try. unless the chipset is bad. then all sata port are faulty.

sounds like window 8 does not native support which ever sata port your cdrom is plugged into, thus requiring a secondary driver to load before installation.

de ja vu - the old days when window 95 did not natvely support scsi controllers and required secondary driver to load before installation.

chances are the cdrom is not connected to the native sata port or you do not have the correct driver in the flash drive for the non-native sata port.

without basic trouble shooting skills needed to isolate defective components. some are best off buying preinstalled ready to use out of the box computer such as dell, gateway, emachine, etc.

will try all 8 different SATA ports for the CD to locate native port and report back. Am considering ASUS MB manual maybe should be burned with list of forbidden books. Maybe Asus rep Melaka heard this story before.

All other suggestions were followed.

New development is every other start up system fails to recognize the plugged in hard drive.

the 6 yellow one are Z87 native (win 8 should support those - if not you will need driver from intel)
the 2 black one are asmedia non native (and will definitely need driver from asmedia)

if both z87 and asmedia fail.
try a different verfied working cdrom.

if that fail too.
try a verfied working sata cable.

if that fail too.
then its definitely mb.

given that new development. very likey its the chipset/mb.

note: your already white hair might just all fall off due to the multiple lost brain cells from dealing with asus rma. (might be easier to just exchange it at the place of purchase)

last time i built was 2008 Core Duo E8400.

After reading all posts, trying all options--including loading UEFI defaults--

system now recognizes Intel SSD but fails to recognize any other HD including new WD Blue 250 gig--ie. neither boot menu or SATA configuration in Advanced Mode shows HD.--all ports show empty except CD. Plug in SSD and it shows.

Is this--as was noted--probable chip set problem or all SATA ports corrupt--

further note--Flash drives plugged into USB 3 ports--sometimes they show, sometimes they fail to show. This MB without USB 2 although assuming the USB 3 runs on USB 2 till drivers installed.

Asus phone rep walks me through 15 min. trouble shoot session. Flash new bios.

Conclude--bad chip set, likely overheating and degrading over time.
