Is this an RMA-able offense?

I bought a new mobo from a computer shop, i clear the cmos it stops working, I have had it for about a month now, also, after i cleared the cmos, I only got a blank screen on start up, the first time all the lights turned on etc, now, the computer won't even turn off, if the mobo is now dead does that mean it won't post? meaning.. their may be a chance that my PSU is still alive? because i had to turn it off from the back switch.

You didn't violate the terms of your warranty by clearing your CMOS if that's what you're asking.

Well that and I didn't want to commit any moral offense, though I wouldn't RMA it if it was my own fault, though I think in this situation it wasn't.

Well the back up information is that I formatted my hdd and updated the drivers from the msi site, i made a boot disk when it asked me to, I then flashed the bios, and it restarted the computer, it came up with something called cmos error and.. you know the rest of the story.

Ah you had a BIOS misflash!

Well you can try a blind flash. Flashing the BIOS without any visual prompts. Or find a PCI Video card and use that. THen there are sights out there that sell new BIOS chips but i personally wouldn't try it. Other than that i think your warranty is voided.

So what else did you do?

If you saved the original BIOS like you should have, try to flash it back.

ahh i only flashed the bios when it said cmos error :S ahh, but im going to bed, so do don't bother with this thread i'll just take it in and see if the guy i know can do anything if not, upgrade time.

Next time try MSI's Windows based flash utility (I'm assuming they have one because every new board I've had from Asus, MSI, Abit, and Epox had them), it's almost impossible to mess that up.

Im rather sure that is what I used, although, I flashed the bios, after I got the cmos error, because I was still able to reach the OS.

Gigabyte years ago certainly honoured my warranty when I had a bad bios flash. Was their bios and I followed the proper proceedure. I took it into the shop where I bought it, explained the situation and they said no problem, just happens sometimes. :beer:

Yeah I don't think you can void your warranty by doing flashes of your BIOS. If you followed the instructions properly they can't stop you. They even endorse the procedure by providing updates on their site.

Sounds to me like he

1) Flashed successfully
2) CMOS was blanked as expected
3) Board blew up

Unless you flashed the wrong BIOS in step 1 - which I doubt, because you wouldn't get to step 2 - I don't see anything wrong with an RMA.

Thanks for the help guys, the guys who put my system together told me to bring it on in and they'll take a look.
