Is This An Optimal Setup??

I currently have a home network setup, but I want to know if I and doing it the best way possible. I currently have a DSL modem, a Linksys WRT54G, a Linksys WGA54G, 2 desktop (1 will be added as a server/web server later) and 2 laptops.

The 2 desktop are hard wired and the 2 laptops are wireless. Currently everything is using the IP's 192.168.1.x and subnet 255.255.255.0. All are DHCP except for the WGA54G. I was wondering if I should separate my wireless equipment from my wired and if so how? Or is there anything else that I can do to make this optimal for future growth for example?

Thanks

Hi,

That sounds very good as it is. Unless your future growth (in terms of numbers of machines) will be significant - in which case I would suggest using a pc linux router and access point instead of the linksys wireless router - you'll be fine.

Good luck,

1. I always tell everyone to KISS, as in Keep It Simple Stupid. The setup you have is fine.

2. Unless you are planning to have more than 254 clients or some other complex configuration, in which case you wouldn;t have bought a consumer product, that Linsys device, coupled with an additional switch of up to the available 48ports will be FINE.

Our office connection is running though a Linksys router. It supports 200 users on an SDSL connection- works great. Not sure where a geeky Linux box would come in :)

maybe get a switch instead of plugging all your computers to the router, that way you can add more computers to your network in the future.

I'm running a similar setup.

Linksys wireless router hardwired to 4 desktops and wireless to two laptops.

The only think I'ld advise is to "maybe" switch from DHCP to static ips but that depends on how you want to use your wireless laptops. If you go bopping around to multiple networks it might just be better to leave it all DHCP. Once you start running that server though you'll probably find that you'll need to switch to static. Also set the router to only allow the laptop mac addresses on your wireless for added security.

By this of course, understand that you still need a router. A switch would plug in to one of the swtich ports on the Linksys.

Thanks for all the help. I'll just keep my router in place for now and down the road if i need more hardwire ports I'll add a switch. I have my mac filter turned on for the laptps and that is working fine for me. Just have to enter mac address in for any new or when I borrow a laptop from work.

Thanks again
