I have a Malaysian friend who grows out his pinky nail. One time after class one of his teachers asked him if he did coke, and gave him one of those "get help" brochures (the ones that have a bunch of help phone #'s for drug re-hab etc.).

Anyway it's a Chinese (usually) superstition, cutting it off is bad luck. Which isn't all that weird when people carry around rabbits feet, have lucky (unwashed) socks and stuff like that. Nothing is weird, its just different.
