Is this a valid reason to take time off from work?

I have the vacation time, boss just asked me why I am taking off and I straight up told him.

He was kind of like "well why don't you just go when there is a federal holiday". Kind of questioned it.

The way I see it is that it's my earned vacation time. Shouldn't matter. I plan on doing this more too.

wait... it's your vacation time, earned, and he asks you why you're taking it off? none of his bidness.

i would've just said, "i need some vacation time".

Never tell them what you are doing with your vacation time. Keep it as general as possible.

This is good advice and more people should adopt it.

"Just taking some time off."
"Probably working around the house."
"No big plans, just taking a couple days off."

And if you DO have big plans don't come back and brag to everyone about your wonderful vacation in Europe, Hawaii, etc. Brag to your friends. Not at work.

you should have said S&M convention or something distasteful that would make him not ask you anymore

You should have said "doing your wife while you're at work."

I don't see what other kinds of responses you could've expected other than variations of these two.

unless you are on call on your vacation it doesn't matter. You could be going on sex trip to thailand and it's none of their business.

"I found some really hot pics of your wife online, and I want to spend some 'quality time' with them."

Damn you, Genx87!

This reminds me of my rather moronic move last month wherein I told my employer I was going to Chez Panisse while on vacation after we had just met to negotiate pay.

"As you are no doubt aware, happy workers are productive workers. I need to get laid immediately or I swear to god I will burn this place to cinders. I'm sure you understand."

Did you give really short notice (less than 2 weeks) or something? That's the only situation in which I might expect a boss to question why you're taking time off.

Tell him you need a day off to take your concealed carry class, and that it would also set you up for the 3 day waiting period to obtain your firearm. Then just stare at him the rest of the day.

Was he just making conversation, or was he seriously questioning your need to take your vacation time? If it was the former, no big deal. If it was the latter, then he should just mind his own business.

"i'm not at liberty to say, however if i were you, i'd consider avoiding <choose location> around that time. oh... and if anyone comes here looking for me... you never saw me. capiche?"
